Understand This!

Posted by Koko

When asked about possibly closing the 2008 All-Star Game in Yankee Stadium, Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon had this to say,

"We've both earned that right; us, by winning the World Series and having the opportunity of having our manager there and our team being represented, and Mariano by what he's done for this role, we're in Yankee Stadium and blah, blah, blah," Papelbon said. "It's not that easy. Everybody thinks it's a cut and dry answer, but it's not.

He continued . . .

"I would understand it," said Papelbon. "I think it would be kind of bull-headed of me and kind of selfish of me not to understand. I understand it. I fully understand what's going on here."

It is painfully obvious that Papelbon has no idea what's going on here. He speaks about Marino Rivera closing the All-Star Game as some sort of charity, feel-good, hometown, sentimental choice.

Forget about the fact that Rivera has the best post-season numbers of all-time for a closer, forget he has 4 championship rings and 6 pennants, forget that just about every expert believes he is the best closer of all time. Just look at the two pitchers this year:

Rivera has 23 saves in 23 saves opportunities this year
Papelbon has 28 in 32 opps.

Rivera's ERA 1.06
Papelbon ERA 2.43

Rivera has 50 strikeouts in 38 games with 23 hits and 5 earned runs.
Papelbon has 51 strikeouts in 41 games with 32 hits and 11 earned runs.

Rivera has simply outperformed Papelbon this year. You may think that some of the stats are not that far apart, but when you are dealing with closers every notch is amplified 10 fold.

If the game comes down to the 9th inning with the AL up by a couple of runs, Papelbon should sit back, relax, and watch a first-ballot hall of famer do what he does and continues to do best.

Did he really say Blah, Blah, Blah???

I like how you laid out your argument with solid stats.......

Well, by forcing the card to get Rivera in for the 9th the AL nearly screwed themselves last night.....they got lucky that Sherrell guy with the ueter pie lasted for them down the stretch.

Yeah that was the quote, "blah, blah, blah."

As in Terry Francona brings in Papelbon with a 1 run lead and blah, blah, blah, were going to extra innings.

What an asshole!

I like to think that Yankee fans are bigger assholes for threatening Paps wife. Once again they show their true colors.

What? Where did you hear that? Even if it did, just because one crazy asshole makes a threat you indict all Yankee fans? Typical simplistic Met fan logic.

Pabelbon is an asshole but if his wife was threatened of course she didn't deserve it. All's she's guilty of is horrible taste.

Anyway you're just jealous because nobody gives a flying fuck that it's also the last year of that gay bathhouse called Shea. And they care even less about CitiDiscover MasterAMEX Card Field or whatever the fuck its forever gay name is.

You have to admit that most(90%)of all yankee fans are obnoxious and pompous. You guys walk around talking shit to everyone, like your shit don't stink. What happen to humble and gracious. Not in your fucking ignorant vocabulary. Later jack off, I'm going to go cry again.
Not to dismiss the original posting, Pap was an idiot for saying what he said. Later biatch.
