Favre Should do whatever he wants, whenever he wants, Until he can't play!
Posted by RegsFirst of all, I would like to state my qualifications for my opinions on this topic. First of all, I was born and raised in Wisconsin. Second, I have not missed a single packer game since October 30th 1980. That's right, 28 straight years I have watched every single Packer game!!! I have watched Blair Kiel, Randy Wright, Anthony Dilweg, Rich Campbell, Lynn Dickey, and Allan Risher amongst others play QB for the Packers. The team was embarrassing until the day that Brett Favre came into town. Look at the team's record in the 16 years before Favre and compare it to his 16 years and you will know what I mean.
The packers are so ridiculous. Favre was runner up for MVP last year (which would have been his 4th). The Packers should be throwing a party that the winningest and most durable QB in history (not to mention the most TDS and yards in history)wants to play for them again and grace them with his presence.
The only historical example that I can think of that compares is when Michael Jordan retired from basketball to play baseball and then came back.
What would have happened if the Bulls would have said "You know what Mike, we appreciate what you have done, but we've moved on. We signed this guy Pete Myers to be our shooting guard and it wouldn't be fair to him if we let you back. Maybe you could be his backup."
There would have been a riot and Jordan is not even close to the top scorer in NBA history and is nowhere near the winningest player.
This is how I feel when Ted Thompson says he would rather have Aaron Rodgers as his QB. WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?
Rodgers has done nothing and has a very low upside according to most scouts. He is not durable and does not possess ideal arm strength. Mccarthy has admitted himself that he has had to tweak the playbook because of Rodgers' lack of arm strength.
We don't owe him anything. He is a 24 year old multi-millionaire. With Favre we are a Super Bowl contender. With Rodgers we are rebuilding. That's a fact. Favre is our QB until he doesn't want to be. Anyone who thinks otherwise is either a fan of another NFC team or a flaming homosexual. Take your pick.

Regs.....you da man!!!!! I have to agree with you but wish Farve could make up his mind. Every year he goes through the same issues before training camp making the Packers and Packer Nation wait to hear his answer. I am a Farve Fan. I've been to the Homeland. I feel he has got a couple more years in him. I have a question for you. Under what circumstances are you willing to watch Farve play till? Either he get's hurt and can't play anymore or the team goes 1-15 like my Dolphins last year?
First of all this is nothing, NOTHING like when Jordan came back. When Jordan retired the first time it was at the top of his game, left for a year and a half, then came back to win 3 more championships.
He didn't hold the Bulls hostage year after year. Why is it that the Packers are being ridiculous but not Favre? I thought no one man is ever bigger than the team. Obviously Favre does not care much about all the steps a team must follow to move in a certain direction. When he retired the Packers decided to move on. You can't just say, "Oh I didn't mean it," after they go and waste draft picks and start building a new play book.
Yes Favre has been the face of the NFL, but it doesn't give him carte blanche to do whatever he pleases no matter how it effects the rest of the organization. Like Uncle Ben (not the rice guy) says, "With great power comes great responsibility."
Also, why is it a foregone conclusion that Favre will be so great this year? He had a really good regular season after 2 pretty bad ones. Sure the guy can still play, but at what level? He absolutely has the right to play if he wants to, but he has to follow the same rules as everyone else that's still under a contract.
It's also Green Bay's duty to handle the situation with a lot of class, something they have been trying to do, but are apparantely confused how to proceed. It's absurd to ask Favre to play backup, so they must either release or trade him. And Favre needs to just be happy with either of those choices. I don't want to hear, "WWWWAAAAAAA they don't want me anymore, I don't feel welcome here, WWWWAAAAAA!.
Oh and by the way I'm a fan of another NFC team, not a flaming homosexual.
There are a couple fallacies that I would like to clear up.
First of all, everyone keeps saying that Favre had a couple of bad seasons before last season. That is simply not true. Sure statistically speaking you can make a case for it. But if you watched the games, you would have seen some of the worst guard play possible. When guards don't block, defensive lineman collapse the pocket, forcing a qb to throw off of his back foot. It seems funny that Favre started apparently having bad seasons coincidently the exact same year that they lost both of their starting guards to free agency and he had his resurgence at the exact same time that we improved in that area.
It is also very funny that Favre's stats went down and he was "over the hill" at the exact same time that we had our worst receiving core in the teams history. To illustrate, besides Driver, all of the receivers that were on the Packers 3 years ago are no longer on the team and only one of them is still even in the league.
Favre was having to force balls, off of his back foot, to receivers who were not open, in games that the Packers were usually behind in. His accuracy and arm strength were never in question.
Rodgers, at best, will become a Hasslebeck or a Rivers. At worst, he will become a Heath Schuler. Favre is a difference maker and his skills have NOT eroded one bit. He might not be bigger than the Packers, but he sure as hell is bigger than Ted Thompson, Mike McCarthy, or Aaron Rodgers, who all owe their success to Favre's stellar play.
He has not missed a single game or a single training camp practice. It is not like he's walking in the day before the first game and demanding to play. So what if he missed 2 voluntary minicamps. He rarely went to them in past years anyway.
Rob, I agree with you completely on the fact that Favre should be welcomed back as their starting QB (as written in my previous article "To Be Or Not to Be").
However, I think everything is getting blown way out of proportion. Ted T and Mcarthy are being painted as villians and the media is completely running with this story with little or no facts. I mean look at the interview last night, the whole story broke over a Text Message Favre allegedly sent.....He said he never sent one but spoke to McCarthy.
Anyways, my point being that Favre will be the Starter for the Pack this season and that is what McCarthy wants and Ted T. will eventually accept it as well. However, in the mean time they need to protect their investment in A-Rodge.
If Favre backs out again or gets injured early they then have to turn back to Rodgers to lead the team. Plus as it stands Rodgers is the future of the team. What the organazation is trying to avoid is exactly what you are perpetuating.
A Divided Locker Room/Divided Packer Nation. Right now you just completely trashed A-Rodge and are Anti-Aaron. Well what happens if he somehow happens to be their starter this year....are you going to convince yourself that all of the sudden he is not horrible? What about the players in the locker room that have to decide if they want A-Rodge of Favre throwing to them? What if Greg Jennings and James Jones start questioning/doubting A-Rodge just the same way you are or Packer Nation is. You completely isolate the future of your franchise and relegate him to a bitter, insecure, nutbag that will never recover and will never lead the Packers again.
I agree with your assertion on him and personally I think Brian Brohm has more potential so I am willing to let the Pack take that risk. But what about this year still???? As reliable as Brett is we still will more than likely have to turn to A-Rodge at some point to help the team this season or next.
Ultimately, the Pack will back down after they realize Favre is serious about his comeback and they welcome him back. They might say something like we will evaluate the QB position just like any position and decide on who will be our starter...blah blah blah...but there will definitely be a "Wink" Wink" agreement betwenn Brett and Mcarthy saying your our starter but to appease Rodgers and Thompsons ego we will just go through these motions.
Plus, in Football as in most sports chemistry, camraderie, and most importanly Trust are HUGE factors in a Teams Success. Do you think if the Pack need Rodgers at some point he is not going to doubt McCarthy's trust after he just told everybody and their grandmother that he is their unquestioned leader and then retracted......or what about all the players who said "Your Da Man"...oh wait Brett is here everything is Much better now.......as much as you might not agree "Ego" plays a huge role in a players confidence and ability to play and what is going on right now has to be absolutely destroying Rodgers psyche almost to the point he will never be a successful Packers QB.......and ultimately that is what McCarthy and Ted T. are trying to protect........Just in Case.
Plus, you know Favre will be easy to win back over for McCarthy......just hand him the ball and everthing is all good with him again........
And yes.....your comparison to MJ was a bit of a stretch......it is more like when he retired and then came back out of retirement to play for the Wizards.
And, Koko I never realized what a big NBA fan you were. I would have taken you for a guy that hates the NBA. Maybe that is just because your Team is putrid.
The NBA use to be my life back in high school. I paid close attention to all the majore sports but the Knicks were the end-all be-all for me back then.
After Ewing retired I kept tabs on their win loss record but if a game was on TV, I didn't scrap any other plans like I use to.
I think now that Darth Thomas is gone they'll be fun to watch again. I predict I'll be getting back to basketball more in the coming years.
Lets try this again. Rusty Razor, take #2. Let it end!!!!!!
Rich, I tried to cut it off but JW egged us on..........
If Rodgers is the starter I will root for him 100% and will wish him well because I want the Packers to win. He seems like a nice enough guy. I just see an average QB when I look at him. if i'm wrong, i'll admit it and be happy. I was pissed when Favre retired and happy when he said he wants to return.
