It may have been a nightmare for Galarraga, but Jim Joyce's blown call at first base last night may have just saved baseball from an even worse fate.
With all of the horrible calls and umpire behavior this year, a botched perfect game could not have come at a better time. It will now be almost impossible for the baseball committee to deny that the game needs replay in a big way. And it needs it before something of this magnitude happens in the playoffs or even worse, the World Series.
So let the discussions begin about how baseball should finally install instant replay into more facets of the game.
I say just copy the NFL system which seems to work rather well. Each manager should get 2 opportunities to challenge a call ( no balls or strikes, just plays at bases or fair/foul) and if they get both challenges correct, they get a 3rd. And most importantly, if a manager uses a challenge there is no discussion or argument from the umpires, no umpire meeting, just an immediate look at the replay to get the call correct. This will actually save time in the game from the bitch and wine system we have now.

Well Said Koko. I cannot find a flaw in argument........maybe we spent too much time together this weekend but for the first time I think I agree with everything you stated. I must note that I am only on my first cup of Joe so that may change later but for now you are dead on.
Also, I can't believe the "purist" argument against Instant Replay is that it will make an already long game even longer.
When was the last time any of you watched all 9 innings of a baseball game???? For me, I can't tell you the last time.....maybe Game 1 of the Brewers dramatic series with the Phillies 2 years ago. But all in all......with DVR and more nobody sits down and watches all 54 outs.....Nobody!
I actually heard about a new rule this year in the SEC that states that once a pitcher touches the ball after a pitch, he has 20 seconds to make his next pitch. The only thing that starts the clock over is if the batter steps out. Th jury is still out if I agree with it, but I thought it was interesting.
I don't know if the umpiring is worse or are replay technology has gotten better, but I have always been a fan of getting the calls right, regardless of the situation. If a throw beats a runner, he should be out.
The one issue is if the replays can be used for everything. For example, on double plays, it is a common practice for a shortstop to slide over the base when catching the ball. This is done mostly for his safety, so he can get out of the way of the runner, faster. Technically he does not touch the base. Should a team be able to challenge this? Or a check swing on strike 3?
I agree something should be done. I'm just not sure what.
Oh, and a kind of funny sidenote. I was at a party on Sunday and was talking to a Phillies fan. I started giving her shit because I thought Ryan Howard pulled his foot on the last out of Halladay's perfect game. We were joking about what would happen if the ump actually called that on the last out and what the Philly fans would do to him. We both agreed that an ump would never make a call like that and now 3 days later, a similar thing happened
Yeah Keith, in between your desecration of Sunday papers and persecution of elevator control panels, we did have a lot of bro time last weekend.
And just for the record, I actually do watch the entire baseball game. You see, because my team is dedicated to winning, I am dedicated to watching them play. I know that might sound foreign, but it's how we Yankee fans roll.
And yeah Regs, if that game was in Philly, the umpire does not leave the field alive. Those people are feral creatures of doom.
