Random Thoughts From Reger

Posted by Regs

Ok, so this blog has been kind of lacking lately so I have some random thoughts to throw out there. Please feel free to discuss any/ all topics (not just Koko, although his thoughts are apreciated as well)

- Could the BCS be more stupid? I literally was on pins and needles on Sunday waiting to see if my beloved Badgers were going to get passed by Ohio St (a team that has the same record as us, whom we beat handily). The reason some "experts" gave is because LSU lost, it moved Ohio St 1 spot closer to the Badgers in the human polls and therefore could catapult Ohio St ahead of us in the BCS. To recap, even though the Badgers beat a bowl team by 50 points the previous day, they almost lost their Rose Bowl berth to a team they beat because LSU, a team neither played, lost.

- Is there any actor in history who has had more repeated funny "one liners" than Leslie Nielson? Most of his best movies are well over 10 years old, but his lines are still just as funny today. To this day, every time somebody says the word "surely" in a sentence, my brain immediately shifts to "and don't call me Shirley" mode.

- After all of our arguing (mostly Keith and Koko) about Derek Jeter, it has become blatently obvious that he is showing his "true colors" with his ridiculous contract demands to the Yankees. He is essentially saying " You know it would be a PR nightmare if i left, so pay me $15 million over my worth, or else". Holding the team who has already paid him $189 million over the last 10 years hostage like this is disgraceful. The Yankees made a very generous offer of $15 million per year and he is just thumbing his nose.

- For how ridiculous I think the BCS is, unfortunately some of what it stands for has merits. Namely making the regular season extremely vital to the elite programs. Unfortunately with the way the NCAA basketball is run, with its new proposed expansions, the regular season means virtually nothing. I just can't get into the so-called hype games that occur early in the season when the winners and the losers are both going to the dance anyways. I think we need fewer at-large bids so we avoid sending teams that didn't even win half of their games into the tournament.

- The NFL has to do something about their playoff format. I'm sorry but when the "butt-rams" finish 7-9 and go to the playoffs and the 10-6 Giants don't, there is a major problem. You need to just pick the top 6 teams in each conference to go. In theory, this still gives teams from weaker divisions an advantage because they still get to play the other lesser teams in their division twice.

- And finally, I am still very much in favor of having a "minor sports" espn. Fans of these sports get offended when I say that, but let's face it. Every wins. Number 1, the real sports fans don't have to deal with hearing about last nights' hockey, nascar, soccer, ect highlights. Instead these sports would have their own station dedicated to them where a Sidney Crosby game winning goal could be the lead story or Jimmy Johnson driving a car a bunch of time in a circle could get more air time. The baseball/basketball/football fans would be thrilled, trust me.

That's all for now... we will save politics for next time.

DJ is not holding the Yankees hostage. It's called negotiations and it happends to be a public affair. Yeah our poor asses would love 15 million to play ball or do what we love. Derek deserves a 4 year contract for 16-18 million per year. He is a great ball player and the Yankees can afford it.

Its not like he has been undervalued. He has been making $19 million per year for the last decade. He has already been paid hansomely for all of his great years.
So that needs to be thrown out the window. look at present value and future value (as a 40 year old)and try to justify even $15 million.

Jeter sucks cock.

Have to agree with Regs on Jeter.....It's not like he was underpaid in the past and no way you can tell me he is worth the money he is asking for when he is clearly declining....although Koko prefers to say he is getting older but wiser and his skills only dip intermittently cause he is sill a popular player in New York despite clear stats painting a different picture.

Also, Regs the BCS is a little messed up but it is the best there is currently. Your argument about Wisconsin is a redundant argument....what about MSU fans? They can say the same things about beating Wisco along with many other colleges. There is no perfect system as there are way too many teams and too many variables so no point in arguing.

Interesting stat here....did you Know TCU has lost 26 straight games against teams that finished the year in the top 50!!!!!! I wanted to see Boise and or TCU in the Championship game just to mess with the system but can you believe how outrageous that is....oh and mr. correction man.....that streak will be snapped this year as I'm sure Utah will finish ranked in the top 50.

I also disagree with you Rob on not giving a division champ a playoff spot in the NFL. However, I would make a change and not give them home field advantage but you have to give division champs a playoff spot otherwise what is the point of divisions?

Jeter to the Brewers....for fair market value of course........and Robin Yount never held his team hostage nor did Hammerin Hank Aaron!!!!!

Sean don't troll on the Dojo please. It takes away from the discussions.

I agree that $15 million is more than a fair deal for Jeter and if it comes down to it he will sign that deal. But he is a superstar player and since when do they ever sign the first offer sent their way? That's what agents are for, plus you have the debacle of A-Rod's contract which is a big factor, don't be naive about it.

Casey Close is going to get the best deal he can for his client. Jeter knows this is his last big contract and it's his right to get as much as possible.

There are no "true colors" to be shown here. Jeter didn't beat his wife or get caught with drugs. He's just doing what anyone in his position would do. This is a very sensitive situation for the Yankees and everything is under a microscope. Jeter himself hasn't said anything on the matter and his agent is on the record stating the 6-year deal that was reported coming from Jeter was completely false.

Besides Regs, how can you be begrudge Jeter a few extra million per year? How else is he going to pay those Obama tax increases?

Once again the great and powerful Overstater . . . Keith.

No one is holding anyone hostage, it's a negotiation. Besides how can anyone have a hostage when neither side has any real hand in the matter. Both sides MUST get the deal done. And it will get done.

And Keith if you're going to bring up something to help your argument at least try to actually cite something that does. Jeter's stats do not prove a decline, they prove an anomaly. One year out of 15 is not a trend. They guy hit .334 in 2009 and is a career .314 hitter. Hitting .270 the very next year is drastic and indicates something much different was going on. Perhaps mechanical or even an injury that was not reported. Jeter is notorious for doing that.

And the NFL playoff controversy is the exact same scenario. Everyone goes nuts anytime things don't go exactly right. How many teams have made the playoffs with a .500 record? 1, maybe 2 all time. I'm not sure, you can look it up but this is not a trend that needs to addressed. The season isn't even over yet. There are 5 games left. And if the division winner is 8-8 or 7-9, so be it. You don't change the entire system because of one crazy year. You need a trend to start overhauling rules that have been more than adequate for a very long time.

An option for the NFL would be to decrease the number of divisons and the top seeds will make it to the playoffs, like in Basketball. The top divison leaders can have a bye.
