So Obama and the Democrats took a real beating in the House of Representatives on Tuesday.
I've heard much analysis from both sides. Some say it was more of a vote against Obama than a vote for the republicans. Some say it was due to the youth vote completely disappearing in this election. And some say this was not a completely unusual circumstance as many other presidents have gone through this exact same senario, including Bill Clinton.
I think they are all valid points which equally contributed to Tuesday's result.
As I get older, I just find the human condition fascinating. We can be so ingenious in some facets and completely primitive in others. Of course I can only speak of the people in this country because it's the only place I've ever lived.
As a whole, our microwave lifestyles have now invaded our decision making as well. We no longer have patience or the ability to put things into perspective. Our "big picture," view has become a tunnel. No matter the circumstance, if we don't get drastic results fast, we move on to the next option. Even if the next option is something that's been tried and failed.
Putting the Republicans back in power of The House was a completely reactionary statement made by this country. I do not believe it's a vote of confidence at all. Just a vote of frustration. Frustration that it may take longer to put Humpty Dumpty back together again than it did to smash him into a million pieces.
If the USA was an NFL team, and it just went through 8 straight losing seasons, and in the next 2 years it did a little bit better with a new coaching staff, let's say a net gain of 3 wins per season, should we fire the new staff and bring back the one from before?
How many times have we seen that work in sports?
Now of course I know running the country is not the same as running a sports team. If it was, pure Capitalism would actually work. I was just making a small point.
To tell the real truth I'm not that upset about what happened on Tuesday. In the long run it actually could be the best thing for Obama. Perhaps now the Democrats will actually grow a backbone now that it's against the wall.
I just wish the Democrats were as good at promoting their achievements as the Republicans are at creating fear and doubt. I mean have you really listened to some of the new congressmen and women? It's nothing if not unnerving.
Instead of making a list of progress that we've seen since Obama took office, I'm going to take the Republican approach since it seems to correlate with people in a deeper way.
A wave of the magic wand I stole from the Universal Studios Harry Potter billboard and "POOF," Obama never happened.
-We are losing 316,000 jobs each month instead of gaining 95,000 each month.
-Health insurance companies can deny sick children.
-Health insurance companies can cap payouts.
-Medicare solvency is cut by a dozen years.
-Health insurance companies can deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions.
-GM and Chrysler go out of business - Over 1 million jobs lost.
-40 million Americans do not have health care.
-No TARP act, 16 million jobs lost instead of 8 million.
-100,000 more troops are still at war and still in Iraq.
-Student loans are controlled by corporate lobbyist. $36 billion in grants lost.
-Credit card companies can change your rate without notice or if you're late with just 1 payment.
-Credit card companies can apply all your payments to lower interest balances while keeping the high ones accumulating at the bottom.
-Banks can charge you overdraft fees, one on top of the other, without any opt out.
-We now have restrictions on stem cell research.
-The stock market is on the verge of a crash not seen since the Great Depression.

It amazing how 2 years ago I thought maybe the human race was evolving and we weren't a bunch of ru-tards when Obama won and then this happens and you realize, nope......still a bunch of ru-tards! It really is all about fear. Thats why Bush got a second term, people were made to be affraid not to have him there for some reason (how else can you explain it?). Nobody is scared all hell will break loose without Obama there. He needs to start scaring people!
Can't wait for the 2012 Election.....
PALIN/SATAN 2012
"CHANGE YOU CAN SHIT UR PANTS TO"
Awesome campaign slogan. I'm already starting on the T-Shirts.
Here's the symbol....An old, fat, white guy taking a shit on the American Flag!
Problem is the Republicans are great at winning elections and discrediting the democrats. But that leaves them no time for actual ideas on how to solve problems and fix things. All they know is jesus talks to them and fags are bad! And the Democrates are horrible at winning elections and discrediting the Republicans but have actual ideas (which their too scared to actually put out). "Ok you guys have the house...what are your ideas?".....Cricket.....cricket....cricket....."ummmm we didn't think that far ahead, sorry". "But we won!, haha suck it!"
Koko, Nice well written thesis, however it is your logic that is severely lacking.
To think that there would be no republican response to this reccession is completely nieve.
In fact, the best example that I can give is to the last significant reccession that happened to occur during our lifetimes, and the way a (shocker) Republican lead us out of it and into appox. 25 years of positive economic growth.
Between 1979-1981 the U.S. Economy was on the verge of completely tanking. People were fearful that we were heading towards another great depression (sound familiar) with no end in sight.
Ronald Reagan was elected that year and immediately began working on getting us back on track. He had already been a successful governor of the largest state in the Union (note: not just an actor)and parlayed his work on making California a thriving economy into the Presidency.
Within 2 years, the economy was back on track and by the time his first term was over he was able to be re-elected by the biggest landslide in history. The economy proceeded to be strong for over 20 years (1984-2006).
it is a very simple formula that i will spell out. When person A has extra spending money and feels confident in spending it, they, for example, might decide to build a new house. By building this new house, this causes a chain reaction which leads to a real estate agent selling the property, a builder getting the bid, which in turn puts a carpenter, a plumber, an electrician, an inspecter, an heating a/c person,, ect to work. When this house is completed, person A will need to buy furniture and appliances at least for their new house, which brings business to the local furniture and appliance stores. If enough people decide to build new houses, all of the people mentioned above will be forced to hire more people to handle their workload. Thus creating real jobs.
Right now we have a President who is being avoided like the plague by his own party (Almost every candidate tried to distance him/her self from the President and those who didn't, lost in a landslide). He is telling everyone to be more responsible with their money, while at the same time, increasing the country's debt to record levels. Its like telling your kids not to smoke with a cigarette dangling from your mouth. He is completely unqualified for the job and it is time to move on before it gets worse.
Great Post Koko and retort Regs.
I won't get into it too much as you both make great points.
The only thing I will say is it annoys the hell out of me how people think the Govt and the US is here to serve their every needs. It is nearly impossible for a govt to serve every single persons needs...there comes a point where people have take charge of their own lives.
You can't tell me there is not one job for somebody to find that has been out of work for 99 weeks.
Another great example that makes me absolutely sick is if you read the Orl Sentinel this morning some business owners downtown were whining their business isn't strong enough after 2 Fricking Magic games.
One Idiotic lady is mad at the City because she changed her store from a Clothing Store to a Candy store with a $30,000 Fucking Grant the City gave her.
Guess What....She is Mad the City didn't tell her NOT to do it because she didn't realize people can't bring the Candy into the arena!! Cmon people you can't do everything for everybody. Do some due diligence and take responsiblity for your own life once in a while.
The only thing that is naive in my thinking Regs is that somehow I still believe people can see through the smokescreen, the garbage and the fear that is purpotrated on them.
And please, I really, really hate revisionist history. That class just sucks deep dish yak dick.
If you even try to say that this current recession was not started by a republcian whose name I dare not speak (very excited about the next Potter movie), you lose complete credibility and are nothing more than a right-wing extremist.
Furthermore, it was a Democrate by the name of Bill Clinton who led us out of the recession before this one caused by the father of the republican whose name I dare not speak.
And things are changing Regs, that's the problem you fail to see. People don't just spend extra money anymore, whether they have it or not. People see that even in good times the stock market is not to be completely trusted, real estate is not to be completely trusted, and investments in general are not to be completely trusted.
People are more cautious with their money now. After millions of people lost their nest eggs in the Dubbuwa recession, the housing market crashed, and businessmen like Bernie Madoff, people are much more wary of investing money in anything.
What he who shall not be mentioned did was like a 9.0 earthquake. Aftershocks will be felt for years and we are still trying to calm and stabilize the economy. AND IT'S WORKING! No matter what Fox news says. Yes it's working slowly but for fuck sake look at what the damage was.
People scare easy and the Repulicans take full advantage of that. In fact it may not even be their fault as they are people too and seem to scare easier than Shaggy and Scooby.
And stop lying! JUST STOP LYING!
It's not getting worse, jobs are increasing every month. The stock market is miles back from the ledge thanks to Obama. If you want to complain about the pace, fine I can understand that. That's a legitimate discussion.
Stop screaming FIRE, FIRE, FIRE when nothing is burning. You're just another alarmist.
And if he's unqualified, then who is qualified Regs? Because it's the Republicans who just voted in a slew of unqualified Tea Baggers into congress solely on the basis of "I'm angry." Now that's something to be scared about.
And yes I agree with you Keith. The unemployment rate is being inflated with people that are just not even looking for jobs. So how do you combat that? Stop unemployment? Perhaps, but then you're punishing good honest people that are legitmately looking for work as well. I just never liked it back in school when the whole class was punished because one little jerkwad stole a book or vandalized a desk.
It is frustrating because no matter what you're still going to have morons in our society.
But I believe if you vote for The Goat, he has some legislation to take care of the less intelligent. But I'll let him explain his own platform.
The real smokescreen is the fact that Americans are resorting to lesser jobs and taking on more tasks at less pay, just to keep their jobs. These numbers are not reported by the democrats. People in sales that are banging their head against the wall because nobody is spending. they are not part of the unemployment numbers, but they are worse off.
Building a high speed railway and fixing roads might create temporary jobs, but they are not permanent. just like cash for clunkers and the home buyers credit. Same thing. Temporary solutions.
There might have been some ups and downs, but the overall direction of economic growth has been consistently positive since 1982, until 2006. In fact, most experts agree that it was when Clinton became a more moderate liberal (after the 1994 mid-term elections)that the country saw its biggest growth of his tenure.
And i don't know what you were doing Koko in the years 2000-2006, but most people that I know had it pretty good during those times. unemployment was at or under 5% consistently and the stock market was booming. I lived in Fort lauderdale during that time and businesses everywhere were booming. I will admit that people were pretty careless with their money and didn't save properly, but you can't deny the prosperity that was occurring. Go ask any small business owner how business was during that period and i guarantee that they will give a positive response.
I will say it again. When and only when consumer confidence is restored will we escape from this mess. People with money have to have the confidence to invest and spend. Right now they are sitting on their money because they are scared of what Obama might do to them (ie tax increases). Until that is fixed, nothing else matters.
You paint with way to broad a brush and mistake your thoughts as insight.
First of all I'm in sales. And business has increased each month over the last year. We sell to all sorts of companies, large and small. They are spending money and lots of it.
Shrugging off infrastructer work as arbitray is not only short sighted but also dangerous. Whether the work last 5 or 50 years it's a necessity the country cannot afford to ignore. Not a debatable topic. Our infrastructer is one of the oldest in the world and in much need of upgrading. To throw it aside as something to deal with later is to invite a catastrophe.
And you're going to champion 2000-2006? If I might steal a bit from SNL . . . Really?
The fact that the entire housing boom was a facade caused by deregulation of the industry by that president was a good thing . . . Really?
It's fantastic that more than half of the jobs that were being created during that time were minimum wage jobs . . . Really?
Oh and I noticed you stopped at '06. Let's see I wonder why you left out those last 2 years? What happend? Oh well, I'm sure it wasn't important.
By the way, I heard Japan is thining of claiming victory in WWII right up until August 5, 1945.
I'm sure that would go over just fine.
And please come out of your bunker. No one is scared of Obama. Stop with the tax nonsense. People aren't investing or spending because they've been burned. Plain and simple. They are gun shy and who could blame them.
Confidence will be restored but the country is like an innocent kid that just got mugged at gunpoint. We are in shock. What happened, happened relatively fast. It's going to take time for trust to be restored. That can't be rushed no matter who is in control or who is president. In the meantime, the economy has been coming back one brick at a time.
If it's too slow for you, fine. But it's really hard to listen to critisim about rebuilding from the people who broke the economy in the first place.
Where is this "Ft. Lauderdale" you speak of Regs? And how did you spend the years 2000 - 2006 in this "alternate universe" where those things were happening? I would like to go!
You know whats gonna happen now. In the next two years Obamas work is gonna start to change things for the better and guess who gets the credit....and thats how we end up with a teabagger president in 2012! FANTASTIC!
I think we may be a little hard on the "how do you break a teabaggers dick, kick his sister in the chin" republicans. The sky is really falling for them in a sense. Whites are becoming the minority, gays are marrying, theres a BLACK president! and of course there's always the jews crawling around with their horns! THATS SOME SCARY SHIT!
And as far as my "legislation", i would never use the term "less intelligent"...its insulting. I'll except retarded, tard, corkys, etc. I don't think I could post my entire platform on here for fear of the FBI coming to my door. But lets just say...."DEATH PANESL", lots and lots of death panels! Which is one thing i'm displeased with Obama about. I believe those were promised? No? Maybe that was just fox news?
Hey, anyone have a running back they want to trade this week?
I don't think 01' was that good of a year? At least the last few months? I don't exactly remember but something with a plane and buildings? But i'm sure that was Obama's fault too. Him and his fellow Muslim friends! And thousands of kids dying in some war? What a great time that was! Really? But because a few people in Ft. Laudy were comfortable then everything must have been good.
I know it sounds like i'm just spouting out stupid one liners for shock value but thats what people sound like when they talk about whats going on in the country. Its all made up and out of touch.
i've said ever since Obama took office that the people being hurt the most were (primarily) white collar middle class Americans and blue collar americans with tenure. Anybody used to making between 40,000 and 100,000. I don't have exact numbers, but I would say a guess would be that about 70% of working Americans fall in this range. Maybe even higher.
These are mostly people with houses and health insurance. Educated people that have worked there entire adult lives. who are now out of work.
Please give me one thing that Obama has done or proposed to help out these people?
Oh, and when you take a look at a graph, you look at trends over time, not temporary spikes one way or the other. i think i learned about that in 6th grade. You can't take one event 9/11, and make a sweeping judgment. If you take a broad look at economic growth between 1982-2006, you will see it consistently moving upward.
And Koko, you are right, I did stop at 2006 because things were not done to stop or slow down the inevitable reccession by Bush. i don't think Bush was a great President by any means, but to categorize his entire presidency as a disaster is just plain wrong.
No, its comletely right....his entire presidency was a GINORMOUS CLUSTER FUCK OF FAILURE!!! Absolutely no doubt about it! and i don't believe in absolutes cause nothing is ever perfectly good or bad but those 8 years were the epidemy.....a "perfect storm" if you will.....of "FAIL"! (except for the benefit comedians got)
I believe thats why the Republicans lost the house, senate, and presidency a few years ago. So why put them back in? The American people are like a battered wife. We got beat by the Republicans and now they are telling us, "were sorry, won't ever happen again, we've changed". And the people nievely believe it. Then what happens? We get thrown down a flight of stairs again!
Regs you have to slow down and notice the obsurd amount of hypocrisy you just spouted.
You say it's ridiculous to call Bush's entire presidency a failure, but you'd like to have Obama removed after his first 2 years.
I can't even describe how insane that it.
First of all I'd love to know about one shred of good that did come from Bush. Any supposed good was just a grenade that went off at the end of his presidency leading us up to where we are now.
He is easily the worst president of the modern era. It's not even close. And if not for Obama's actions during his first 2 months the stock market would have completely crashed for the second time in history. I just love how no republican can give him credit for that in any way. And how the democrates are too spineless to point it out.
Even after Obama has made progress, haulted the looming disaster that was left by Bush and actually now has jobs increasing month by month for the last year, you say he's a failure.
And yes, I am in that middle class and he has helped me more in 2 years than Bush ever did.
Ever since he's been in office less taxes are taken out of my paycheck. It's not grand amount but it does add up over a year, between $500 and $1000 depending on my commission.
I can now pay down the higher interest items on my credit card where before every payment went to the lower amount and the interest kept building at the bottom.
I am currently in a loan modification process that Bank of America is trying to put off as long as they can so that they can forclose on my condo. I won't let that happen because I'm still current on payments and will not give into them. Eventually they will have no choice but to follow the Obama plan. I do blame Obama for leaving the execution of his plan in the hands of the banks but I'm sure it was not easy just getting it past in the first place.
Those are just off the top of my head. You know how Bush helped me in 8 years? A one-time $200 trickle down check that I deposited into my savings account.
Yeah, totally worth all the bad stuff.
