Why does MLB Schedule these?
Lately, I have been watching the MLB network (which I really enjoy) and I have been noticing only a week or two into the season and there are a ton of empty seats already in many stadiums during games. Now, one could argue it's the economy and all but upon further investigation it's because it is small market teams playing in miserable weather outdoors in the beggining of April. Down here we take for granted our beautiful sunny weather and forget it is near miserable conditions in the rest of the country still. Thus, in 40 degrees and rain even I wouldn't want to be sitting at a baseball game....unless it was October.
To me this seems like a logical statement. But it makes me wonder why the brass at Major League baseball does not get it? Why would they not simply schedule around this? By my quick count there are about 14 Cold weather teams in baseball that do not play indoors. If I were commissioner I would simply not schedule a home game for 7 of those 14 teams for the first two weeks of the season. The other 7 teams I would make an exception cause regardless of the weather these teams will still either sell out or come relatively close. I mean if you are a struggling small market team like the Royals, Pirates, or Reds why would you want to waste a early in the season game where nobody comes out to the park cause it is miserable outside when you could have more games at your park in the summertime when it is beautiful out and more kids could come cause they are off of school?
The other 7 teams in cold weather areas I would not work to hard to avoid since they will probably sell out anyways. This includes:
-Yanks
-Mets
-Cubs
-White Sox
-Red Sox
-Phils?
-Indians?
Cold Weather Teams that should not have a early season game
-Reds
-Royals
-Orioles
-Nationals
-Pirates
-Tigers
-Cards?
I mean why is Texas playing at Detroit? Jays (Dome team) at Indians? Rays at Orioles? Houston @ St. Louis........couldn't they have flipped them around?
I mean I see 4 games that were already cancelled because of bad weather.
Just curious to hear if the Dojo agrees with me.......I'm sure Regs will have an in depth explanation as to why these cold weather teams need to host early in the season.....but from the surface it just seems like a no-branier to me. This is not Football where fans don't mind the cold weather and many teams use it to their advantage......I mean nobody wins in a cold rainy baseball game in April right???
Editors Note: (Just some quick ramblings I thought of while watching empty stadiums early in the year on the MLB Network. By the way I think I love this channel. I like it better than ESPN and you get way more insight and stats all day and night long. Is this channel for Free? Or is it on my TV for some trial period and then it will be ripped away from me and I will have to pay?)

I thought it was a pay channel. Nothing is for free these days. You make a valid point with most of these teams but I think you should reconisder the Tigers. Have you ever spoke with Elizabeth from Somerset or Jeff from Riverhead? (allen edmond peeps) They love the Tigers. It seems the economy is hurting their senerio(city), where people are bumbed out and would just rather stay home.
They were just having a huge debate about this on Mad Dogg's show last week on Sirius. A couple of callers brought up the same point you did, so Russo went through the schedule to see if it was possible and there really is not a fair way to do it.
To make all those teams only play on the road for the first 2 weeks screws up the division matchups and series, plus you are unfairly making other teams spend more home games early in the season. Most teams do not want a whole lot of home games early in the season because they are lighter crowds regardless of the weather.
It's sports, suck it up and play in the city you represent or get a damn dome if it's so important.
My solution is cut April out all together, this season is too damn long anyway.
Oh and yes the MLB channel is part of the standard digital package Keith and if you have an HD box, which I know you do, they have an HD channel as well. I think it's channel 1000 or something close to that. I like it better than ESPN too. They can actually go to any game and stay on it to show a big moment any time they want. Plus no moronic Kruck.
Not fair....comcast in NE makes you pay for everything!!!!
Great channel , it's following up on the mode of NBATV and NFLTV.
