Personally, I have always been astounded when I watch Monday Night Football and they do those little position introductions and each player says there name and College they went to with the neat little head shot.....or they pick one guy to introduce the D or Offense and their college. Well, if you have ever watched a MNF game with me you will know I always wonder out loud how come most of the guys introduced come from obscure schools. If you were to ask most people, You would suspect a typical offensive team intro would be a run down of traditional College powerhouses...
USC, Ohio St, Florida, Texas, Miami, Etc...........
But, Most of the time....especially Offensive Lineman I always noticed there are more obscure colleges or mid level colleges noted than Big Name Powerhouses. Now, Yes there are plenty of Big Name Powerhouses but you would think well over half would be from these types. Not the case. Listen next time an O-Line is introduced......I guarantee most of them are not from a top 25 ranked school. In fact almost every time 1 or 2 of them are from a school you look to your buddy and say....I didn't even know they had a program.
Anyway, The point to my post is I was listening to Colin Cowherd yesterday and He made another great rant about QB's coming from Big Name schools and not Succeeding. He pointed out that these guys might be more talented than some of their counter parts....but they have not been tested as much or forced to work as hard as their less talented brethren. Think about it.....Tim Tebow walks on the field with the best offensive weapons surrounding him nearly every single game.......He has the advantage. Not saying Tebow doesn't work hard just pointing out that in the heat of battle he doesn't have to grind as hard as say Matt Ryan at BC where he didn't have one Pro Level player on his Offense.
To Back this point up....Check out the top 15 rated QB's from last year and their corresponding Colleges. Only TWO Came from Football Factories......and Matt Cassell didn't even start a game at USC......Yet he is up there skewing the numbers a bit.
1. Rivers (NC State)
2. Pennington (Marshall)
3. Warner (Northern Iowa)
4. Brees (Purdue)
5. Manning (Tenn)
6.. Rodgers (Cal)
7. Schaub (Virginia)
8. Romo (E. Illinois) Come on.....Easter Illinois???
9. Garcia (San Jose St)
10.) Cassel (USC)
11.) Ryan (BC)
12. Hill (Marlyand)
13. Wallace (Iowa State)
14. Manning (Ole Miss)
15. Mcnbabb (Syracuse)
Very interesting to me. I think it just goes to point out the value of Hard Work over talent overall. How many times do you see talented people in life fail because they are not pushed. Just some food for thought.
And just for fun.....Here are the Colleges of Koko and Rich's Vaunted G-Men O-Line.
Seubert-Western Illionois
O'Hara-Rugters
Diehl-Illinois
Snee- BC
Mckenzie- Penn St.

Yeah I heard that rant as well Keith. Howard is off again this week so I'll be listening to Cowherd and jotting down every prediction he makes. Kinda like a Beta test for that website I want to make.
But I disagree with the amount of QB's on that list from obscure colleges, no they may not all be power houses, but that changes from year to year and decade to decade. Most of those colleges are well known and have had football success in the past.
Syracuse may not be relavant today but everyone knows they have a football program and they were at one time very very good. Purdue is well known, and so is Cal, BC, and Ole Miss. Those are not obscure programs.
As usual, Cowherd overstates. He made an interesting point that was valid but then he cheapens it by overstating that it's a 90% of the league thing.
Koko, My bad I may have overstated by using the word Obscure.....I meant smaller college.
Yes, Everybody knows Syracuse has a football program....but it is atrocious. And yes, the list changes from decade to decade and maybe things have opened up a bit in the past decade because you don't have to go to Notre Dame or Miami to get on TV anymore. Almost every team from Boise St down the line gets national TV exposure.
Just a point that you would not have guessed only 2 Major College powerhouses would have a starting QB in the top 15 ranked last year.
Yeah it was an interesting stat that Cowherd brought up but then he makes it out like it's always been like that and always will be.
You mention the college powerhouses USC, Ohio St, Florida, Texas, Miami. Well Miami is in no way a powerhouse and hasn't been for a while now. Who else would you add? Oklahoma probably and who else? Florida State has been very successful, they are not a powerhouse right now either.
The thing that happens with trends is that people do not realize they are trends. Cowherds sees this current trend of only 2 Qb's from powerhouse college programs in the last couple of years and makes it out to be the norm. Trends will change again and again and again. And the powerhouse teams will rise and fall.
It was still an interesting point he made, but as usual he takes it too far.
Whoa...Whoa...Whoa...
I simply Threw in Miami to make a more personal connection with our Miami fans......and the fact that Miami usually has top talent recruits.
The point is there are less top rated players from the traditional "Football Factories" than you would think.
OK...Here is a list of Mel's Big board and the top 15 players.
1. Bradford-Oklahmoa
2. McCoy- Oklahoma
3. Young Ohio St
4. Suh Nebraska
5. Williams Oklahoma
6. Hardy Mississipi
7. Spikes Florida
8. Mays USC
9. Herzlich BC
10. Snead Missisippi
11. Robinson Florida St
12. Lafell LSU
13. Jones Syracus
14. Gresham Oklahoma
15. Arenas Alabama.
Now.....that is a rundown of College Powerhouses. And Yes, Syracuse and BC have a player in there but it is dominated by big name schools. Wow...I didn't realize Oklahoma was so stacked.
I actually agree with Koko. Saying that Virginia or NC State or Boston College or Cal are obscure or even small schools is ridiculous. They are in BCS conferences and play in Bowl games every year. With scholarship reductions, the talent is forced to be spread out amongst the schools. I give you Romo and Warner, but I wouldn't say that the other guys had to work any harder to get ready for the pros.
In fact, it could work against you. Tebow is arguably the greatest college QB of all time, but on Kiper's Big Board he is not even top 15.
Ok.....I already said I Big Fished it a bit with the Obscure reference.Wrong Choice of words. But, YOu have to admit that NC State, BC, and Cal are cleary not traditional Football powerhouses.
I wasn't trying to say these schools are nobody schools nobody heard of.....I was just trying to point out that when you look at an NFL starting roster it usually shocks you to see there are not as many Big Name Powerhous Colleges.
And when looking at the Current College Big Board and the list of top rated QB's from last year.....there are only 3-4 Names out of 15 from lesser college powers in the current poll.....but that number is flipped the opposite way in top rated QB's.
There are only 3-4 guys out of 15 from bigger college programs in the QB ratings.
Miami not a powerhouse , whatta ya mean were the best te.....oh wait sorry, I thought it was 2001.
Oh and it was brought out today that Beasley's rehab thing was planned for months and was a follow up to last pre season when he had smoked sum dope.
Again the media spinned everybody by making it seem like at last desperate despair he checked in to save his life.
The Beas although a punk kid will be a force in the league next year , write it down !
So is Wisconsin obscure since they aint won anything ever ?
Really, who gives a shit!
Rich,
You have to stop taking the medicine you are administering. Your posts have been boring and horrible
Bottom line, Keith is that by your definition, there are probably 5-10 powerhouses, which leaves roughly 110 other division 1 teams that are not powerhouses. The odds are clearly stacked against the powerhouses, since every other school has a starting qb every year.
You can take that arguement to almost anything.
For example, Oak Hill prep is probably the best known high school basketball factory, followed by St. Anthony's, Mater Dei, De matha, and Chicago King. Let's examine the top 10 (opinion) NBA players and whether they went to any of these schools.
Lebron- no
Kobe- no
wade- no
Anthony- No
Garnett- no
Duncan-no
Paul- no
Howard-no
Bosh - no
Roy - no
All ten didn't attend a powerhouse high school.
Regs, Nice Try but High School attendance and College recruting are two different things.
Did anyone here or anybody you know get recruited and/or choose to attend one high school over another?
Yes, I know there are prep schools blah blah that do recruit some kids. But still. It is alot different on deciding a college and a high school.
And back to my point. Fine...Choose 20 College powerhouses. Would you take those 20 over the rest of the field for and see who has more starting NFL players?
Just Curious....Who is your top 15 College Football programs?
And Yes....Working Man Rich brings alot more weak posts than student Rich.
Boy someone check the temperature in Hell right now because Lucifer must be frezzing his red balls off.
I agree with Regs, he nailed the correct point. How many "powerhouses" are there? You can't make a list of 20 because there are only about 5 or 6. Every other team would be considered second tier. If you lose 2 games, there's no way you're a powerhouse. At least not right now.
So if you take the top 15 NFL QB's the odds are that maybe 2 or 3 will come from those 5 or 6 schools.
And take it easy on Rich, he's still trying to regrow his brain back from all the studying. Plus he's a Mets fan, so have some respect for the dead.
Actually, for High School basketball it is worse. Every school that I named recruits nationwide for their players. Hardly anyone else does. That leaves them with very little competition for the top players.
Top 15 College Programs (any order)
USC
Florida
Oklahoma
Texas
Tennessee
Michigan
Ohio State
Penn St.
LSU
Alabama
Florida St
Nebraska
Virginia Tech
Notre Dame
Georgia
I guess it depends on criteria, but I took teams that have been traditionally good(last 20 years) and incorporated recent success (last 5 years). Notre Dame was probably the toughest one to include, but I remembered that they almost won a National Championship just 3 years ago.
Somebody has to be the Debbie Downer. That diprivan got me doing the moonwalk. Maybe I can get reengergized when I see you guys for the draft. Now, I will go lash myself for a while.
I'm going to talk about Donavan McNabb's Syracuse team for a sec. Do you guys remember that team? It was sick. McNabb throwing to Marvin Harrison? Yes, that Marvin. They gave Miami all type of fits I remember. McNabb was named the Big East's offensive player of the decade for the 1990s after being named Big East player of the year 3 consecutive years.
While Syracuse may be down now, he had them at the top while he played there. Oh, he was also a backup on their basketball team that lost in the '96 Championship game.
What about FAU? Now there's a power house!
Go OWLS!!!!
Who play in the Dolphins Stadium . . .
Which is shared with the Marlins . . .
And is now called Land Shark Stadium . . .
Fuck, they should call that thing Animal Planet Park and get it over with.
Go get them bastards tonight! Go Kai!!!!
