Is Harry Potter the greatest movie franchise in history? It's not even finished yet but I'm having a hard time thinking of another series that's as solid throughout all the films as the Harry Potter saga.
Nominate your favorite franchises for a greatest ever list. To qualify the series must have at least 3 films in the series, and yes Star Wars counts as the entire 6 films, you cannot separate them into 2 trilogies.

Not a big Harry Potter fan , pretty lame in my opinion .
I would say The Godfather trilogy is clearly the best.
I would also put star wars ( 4,5 6,)rocky , back to the future , and lord of the rings ahead of Potter.
Die Hard 1-3 were awesome but then they released that bullshit 4th one that sucked pinga.
Didn't I say you can't separate Star Wars? Does anyone respect the rules anymore? You have to include all the parts when ranking the franchise and parts 1,2,3 are definitely included. I actually enjoyed episodes 1,2,3, of Star Wars, especially 3. But I have yet to see a blatantly weak Potter film.
And come on Godfather 3 is brutal. Just an awful film.
Die Hard 2 sucked big time, 3 was fun but very hokey. I thought the 4th was actually the second best one. But none of them even compare to the original. Hans Gruber rules all! AKA Severus Snape in the Potter films. Rickman is one of the best and underrated actors out there.
I never follow rules , fuck that.
Personally the final credits in the Godfather movies is more entertaining than kids with magic potions , magic gay wands , more kids , scrolls , magic cloaks , magic mysterious spells....oooohhhhh.
Kid shit. No thanks.
I admit Andy Garcia and that stupid bitch do hold the movie down a bit but I enjoyed the movie overall.
Hey...You Can't Make your OWN Rules!!!!
Keep Playing the Game unitl your told to stop???
Who do you think you are!!!!!!!
My post, my rules.
I don't even need to ask what your vote is, do I?
If by best you mean boooorrrring, hard to follow, slow, dark, hard to understand what they are saying, stupid, and childish, then Harry Potter would be the best.
If not then this is my list:
1. Star Wars
2. Godfather
3. Rocky
4. James Bond
5. Austin Powers
Regs if anything at all is hard to understand, boring or stupid, it would be your list.
First of all Godfather has to be eliminated immediately because only 2 of the 3 movies are good, the 3rd is Godawful. That's not even a debate.
Austin Powers and James Bond? I don't even know if you're being serious with those, so I won't even react.
Come on guys, you're sputtering like Blaze trying to get that last ounce of gas mileage out of his car.
Give me some winners here damnit!!!
ok so lets eliminate harry potter cause two of us say that all of them suck. ( I didnt think so )
I bet Godfather would get more votes than harry potter .
Pirates of the Carribean series is better than Harry Potter. Stay off the pot!
Star Wars is an easy winner. It only needed 3 of the 6 films.
Might I also add, probably the worst thing about Harry Potter is those fucking annoying British accents.
how about Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm St. and the Halloween franchises?
And they WHERE good.
Other noteable franchises:
Jaws
Martix
Exorcist
Superman
Batman
I think this has become a lost cause.
Well at least we found out that Regs hates British people.
It is a lost cause..and my car still gets good gas mileage, no sputtering here
Ah nice, just trying to start a fire Blaze, nice to see you on the Dojo.
I really dont feel like reading all the posts again but did anyone mention the Alien films?..great movies, even the later ones weren't that bad..
Well, this is a tough one considering personally I have no problem arguing Rocky as the greates movie franchise and I would even argue Rocky IV through Balboa could be top 5. Yes, Rocky IV carries that franchise but everyone has seen Rocky V and I guarantee has watched it more than once......and that final fight seem and those classic one liners redeemed an otherwise spotty movie.
Overall, Rocky is the essence of what a great movie and movie franchise is. The first one set the tone but they still got better and better and did not dwell on some story line that god old and diluted from movie to movie.
There were ups and downs, hero's and villaian, hard work and success triumphing over talent and power house school educated athletes.
And it inspired millions of people around the world.......and then when they finished the first set.......Rocky IV came out and captured another generation and was inbeleivable.
However, I would not have any qualms with a claim that Star Wars is the greatest of all time. It clearly is the definition of a great franchise and inspired millions of other franchises and set the tone......but the best part is they did it going backwards........
Also, I would add I can't weigh in on Harry Potter cause I have never seen either one of them.........which to me is a signal that either I'm a loser or Harry Potter is not that powerful of a franchise. Can you imagine meeting someone in the 80's that said they NEVER saw Star Wars????????? NO way, Never heard of it.....and if you did meet them you would automatically write them off as crazy.
Lastly, My Cuz who reads this site regularly loves Harry Potter so I will say it has to be top 5 since it has had great success....but it can't be top 10 simply because there are alot of people like myself that have never seen it.
Regs hates British people, LMFAO!!!! I love you guys. Fuck your rules Koko.
Having a little trouble following you there Keith, you said Harry Potter has to be top 5 but it can't be top 10. You want to clarify that craziness?
Oh and by the way for any of you that have not seen the Harry Potter films, it is you that's in the extreme minority.
Those films have now made more money in ticket sales than any other franchise in history.
I don't hate British people, just the way they talk and when they try to say that Rugby players are tougher than football players because football players wear pads.
(my arguement against that, by the way, is that Rugby players, for the most part, are slow white people who don't have 1 50ith of the collisions football players have on every play)
I have to watch what I say because my brother's new girlfriend is British.
God save the Queen.
Nice call, Johnny, on the Alien Franchise.
Ooopps....I flipped those numbers...I meant it is top 10 but not top 5.
And I hate that argument that Films now a days broke records for most sales......Yeah cause a movie ticket is now $20 when during Star Wars it was $4.
But......do you not agree with my statement that in the 80's do you know anybody that would claim they never saw a Star Wars film?????
Alright so the contenders are in no particular order:
Harry Potter
Rocky
Star Wars
Alien
Die Hard
Godfather
Back to the Future
Lord of the Rings
Pirates of the Carribean
The Matrix
Sorry Scotty, but the only horror series worth mentioning is SAW. All the rest never get any better than the first film.
Also, we gotta add Indiana Jones, even with the abortion of the 4th film. Indy 1-3 might be the most solid 1-3 ever.
Also:
-Star Trek, even though the first one is terrible
-National Lampoon's Vacation
-Planet of the Apes (originals)
Any other suggestions?
$20 for a movie ticket? Where the hell do you go to the movies?
Yes it is hard to find someone who grew up in the 80's who did not see Star Wars, but it can be said that in 10 years it will be hard to find a kid that grew up in the '00's that did not see Harry Potter.
Potter is a juggernaut in films, both critically and monetarily, that can't be denied whether you like them or not. Plus it's a worldwide phenomenon as well.
Koko I forgot about the Saw movies. I have to disagree about the horror franchises. Tons of kids back in the 80's would flock to the theater to see the new Friday the 13th or Nightmare movies. They got better as they came out. The killings got better and that is why everybody would go see them, to see how the stupid teens got killed this time. also the naked chicks. I thought Nightmare IV was the best. That girl turned into a roach.
Hahahah.....that was one of your best posts yet Scotty. You may have sold me on the horror franchises......I do remember Freddy and Jason has huge parts our childhood.........remember when Freddy was a sausage on a pizza taunting that guy??
I still can't get that thought out of my mind everytime I eat sausage pizza.
You guys are the reason they still make shitty movies.
lol.....I remember that Keith. Damn Koko that's pretty harsh. I bet other Kai's on this site love those movies. Right Regs?? That was your prime. You take any dates to see Nightmare on Elm St. in 3-D??
No dates, but my childhood buddy has a videotape of my brothers, him, and I making a pretend movie called "Friday the 13th- Part 13- Jason meets Freddy". It's even funnier now because they actually made that movie. Yes that was awesome. So many classic Freddy lines
Those were clasic times , going to the theatre with your allowance money to see the new nightmare on elm street or halloween flicks.
Then the drugs came in.............
Godfather hands down number 1.
Dorky magic kids with potions pale in comparison to real theatre consisting of
Al Pacino
Robert DeNiro
Robert Duvall
Marlon Brando
James Caan
Even Abe FUCKIN Vigoda
Keith your example of star wars is excellent , nobody said, naaah I aint seen it yet.
I actually tried by watching Harry Potter 1 and 2 , not horrible movies but also never cared to watch another.
I get that you guys just do not care for the Potter series. Mostly because you're not nearly as into fantasy/sci-fi as I am, but Juan you can NOT say Godfather "hands down" because you know that 3rd movie was bad.
The best franchase can't have a weak link. Godfather is in the top 10, but can never be #1 because of the awful 3rd chapter.
Awesome Regs!!! That was agood idea to make Friday the 13th part 13.
I thought the third Godfather was good. The only disapointment was that George Hamilton replaced Robert Duvall, but George Hamilton did a great job.
I've seen the Potter movies and think they are entertaining.
I heard they were talking about making a Godfather IV.
Hey it's Joey, Keith's cousin....and I decided to finally voice my opinion.....first....harry potter rocks but lord of the rings is clearly the best...anyway, prosthetic johnson you are so right about horror movies! they keep getting better because of the awesome death scenes! my personal favorite is in jason x where he dunks that chicks head in the liquid nitrogen and her face freezes then he smashes it on the counter!!! frickin priceless!!!
Hey welcome Joey.
As much as I'd hate to admit, Lord of the Rings has to be in the discussion. All 3 films were nominated for Best Picture. And the 3rd one is the only 3rd film in a series to ever win Best Picture.
Plus they've made a boatload of money around the world.
But on a personal note, I'd like to capture Peter Jackson and torture him for 9 hours straight as retribution for the 9 hours of my life that he took away from me.
koko i think you mean 9 hours he took away and made totally awesome!
also, i know that back to the future has been mentioned but i don't think it is getting the credit it deserves...
or to throw another series in how about the oceans movies? all star cast and robbing places? how can you go wrong??
Back to the Future I and II are two of my favorite movies ever, but the 3rd one is really bad. The whole old west thing was boring, and took the film off track.
Plus there's a major loop hole in the plot of the 3rd one. The entire time they were in the west, they could have just dug up the Delorean Doc left for Marty to find in 1955.
Oceans 11 is a great film. The 2 sequels are way below par. Even Clooney himself admitted that.
As far as Lord of the Rings goes, Randall from Clerks 2 explains it best:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vy4xv_NLGHg
no way...as a lord of the rings fan i am quite familiar with randall and clerks 2....ugh....and it is a good thing that there isn't a clerks 3 so it can't be put into this list because the first one is so irritating and i can't like the second one on principle! lotr isn't so much about their journey but more about the changes that take place in each character...as well as the war scenes which are bad ass! the story is classic and the movies are great because of the detail that peter jackson and company took to make the movies as authentic as possible. so randall can kiss my ass...ugh i don't like him....
I really do appreciate the amount of hard work that went into those films and they do look great. I actually enjoy the battle scenes.
But I cannot stand the drolling on of the hobbits and the uselessness of the so called all-powerful Gandoff. Even after he turns white, his powers are crappy. The most he does is turn his staff into a big flashlight. Lame.
And why the hell couldn't they just ride one of those big eagles up to the volcanoe? What a waste of time.
And you gotta admit the whole Sam and Frotto thing was insanley gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it can't be avoided.
Just when I thought that everyone from the big W was as bright as Keith, here comes the savior. I've agree with Joey that the LOR series is much better than Harry Potter. I have told you this before Mr. KOKO, and you would look at me in disgust. Go suck the big one.
Its clearly between Rocky or Indiana Jones.
Thanks Joey, and welcome to the Dojo. That was a great scene! That movie had so many great killings. The dude, in the beginning, gets sliced in half. lol.
LOTRs were great flicks. The wars scenes were good. I thought the first one was the best and the others dragged a little.
I thought the BTF trilogoy was good but I didn't like the 2nd movie. I was excited for the sequel to come out but was disappointed.
