Superman No More.

Posted by Koko

So now that the Magic led by Dwight Howard have been defeated by Kobe and the Lakers, can we please remove the "Superman" moniker from #12's persona please?

It was all fun and games at the slam dunk contests but when the name started to stick with the media, and fans are all holding up the shield, wearing superman shirts, and a giant cape is drapped over the Amway Areana, it's gone way too far.

Dwight Howard is a fine player, but Superman he is not. Only one athlete ever truly earned that nickname. Howard has a long way to go if he's going to be the kind of player that can take over a game. He showed flashes of it in the Cleveland series but then dissapeared in the Finals averaging 4 field goals a game. When he was entering the arena for game 5, a reporter asked him how important is this game in his career. Howard answered, "I havn't thought about it." Rivetting stuff. The sad part is that I believed him.

Maybe he'll get there someday, but hopefully this loss will force him to retire his cape until he learns how to use it.

Koko, I know how hard it is for you to accept that nickname but you better get used to it.

Dwight is not going anywhere and he is only going to get better...Waaay Better. He is a paltry 23 which is young for a big man and that name has been a huge hit for him and the league loves the media attention it generates.

I am not here to defend the magic but I do love how everyone has started to trash them like they were one of the worst teams in the NBA.

Cmon....If you have followed any basketball this year Howard is not known for his dazzling offensive skills.....Juan you should know that more than anybody. He had what 9 blocks last game????

And Wade.....yea let's pat him on the back for getting past those tough Atlanta Hawks.

GOAT....Great point with the mouth guard...I noticed that and every game I watched among other people it was brought up. One game we tried to figure out how many players on the floor had mouthguards in.......what % of players do you think play with those? My guess is 22%.

I'm not getting use to it. And guess what, if he doesn't improve those offensive skills, I won't have to anyway. Just because someone is young and shows lots of promise, does not mean he's destined for greatness.

There's no way the nickname will stick if he doesn't vastly improve on offense. In fact, it will be used against him over and over again and become his worst nightmare. Dutch door action, the pendulum swings both ways, what's good for the goose is good for the gander, vice versa, In and Out Burger, Lindsay Lohan.

I think you get what I'm trying to say.

Kobe had that kryptonite.

Well.....Actually He just lead his team to the NBA finals at the age of 23. I don't think he needs to vastly improve to be considered one of the MVP's (AKA Superman) over the next decade.

Also, Superman is a nickname...it's not an award. He was coined superman cause of the dunk contest. Harold Miner was called Baby Jordan for countless years just cause the dunk contest.

its not like the magic had to go through great teams to get to the finals. They had trouble with the 76ers (a 6 seed i believe), can u name anyone on that team? They just got through a celtics team without Garnett. If he was there they don't make it out of the second round. Then they play a entire series 5 on 1 and just make it out of there. When they finally run into a real team they go out in 5. And all along the way Howard doesn't have to play another superstar one on one. He's lucky he plays in a league where talented centers are few and far between. 10 years ago he would be an average power forward at best.

There's a lot of truth in Goat's points there. If Garnett is healthy, Orlando doesn't beat Boston, no one can argue with that.

Plus Howard is the leader of that team, and if he can't be realied on to actually score some points, he's going to end up being a glorified Mutombo. I think he will work it out eventually, but he's got a long way to go. He truly does not even have a decent shot to speak of.

And Keith, you proved my point. How long did the Baby Jordan nickname stick to Miner? About a fraction less than his short career. And how ridiculous does that nickname look now? My point is that it can backfire.

Jordan was given the Superman nickname as a direct result of his play, not from a gimmick.

Keith G. said...

Kokotoffs.....You both make great points.

However, I don't get arguments that say they only beat this team by so and so points..or only got by this team.....You play the game to WIN....as the famed Herm Edwards would say. And WIN they did.

Why are we nit picking their wins?

And what do you mean he did not go up against any superstar? Pau Gasol is an All-Star is he not???

You could say the same for Kobe.....Courtney Lee or Michael Pietrus is not exactly a superstar.

My point is that I'm not arguing against the Superman moniker...I'm just saying it is going to stick and it's not like Howard is only an average player so he is not worthy of the nickname. And again I'm not trying to defend the Magic..just asking why we are nit picking them for making it to the Finals?

Also, I don't recall Jordan being nicknamed Superman? He would deserve it....but I think if you asked any NBA fan and or player who was nicknamed Superman before Howard....it is Shaq.

Which.......goes against all allowable reasons for a nickname since Shaq is technically still in the league......You can't have two guys with the same nickname playing at the same time.

Keith G. said...

And...If Jordan was actually referred to as Superman for a nickname (Which I don't recall) than there is no ifs and's or but's about it.....I agree with Koko that no Waaaaaaaay Howard deserves that nickname.

In fact......based on the fact Shaq is still in the leauge...I am now against the nickname.

Hey Kobe..... Tell me How My Ass Taste!!!

Man what the sorryness of the Milwaukee Bucks will do too a fan. Turn them into magic apologists.
Paul Gasol is an allstar , but a high level defender ? Or even that stiff Andrew Bynum.....please.
I think Dwight Howard is a very good player , but will never live up to the real superman in Shaq. Shaq was much bigger 7-2 compared to Dwight 6-10 and had much better footwork and had a back to the basket game at that age.
Footwork isnt really ever taught , you have it or not.
And finally the 3 point shooting got them there just as much as Dwight's rebounding and alley-oop dunks did. But since the Magic is a jump-shooting team it failed them in the end since jump shooting teams dont win squadooosh.
Superstars take over games..............Dwight is incapable thus not superstar worthy to me , just a good all star.

And what happened to Rashrd Lewis , that guy is a softie !
Dissapeared like Magic.

Would you go up to McCain and tell him, I don't think you really recall your torture correctly?

Then please don't do it to me. Jordan tortured me throughout high school. He was indeed referred to as Superman many many times.

And yes Shaq is a huge Superman fan and has the tatoo, but he defaced it by warping it into some kind of Superman/Shaq hybrid thing.

It's pretty simple though, if Howard doesn't start developing a great offense, the name will fade.

exactly my point keith, the first semi-talented guy he went up against and he got beat. If he were to go up against guys like shaq, ewing, olajuwon, robinson, duncan, morning, etc. he would not score any points or get half the rebounds he does now.

Koko, you're trying to strip a man of his nickname? Oh, you guys lit a fire!!

How bout this? The Magic made the Finals as a #3 seed! Nobody expected them to get there. Only the players, coaches, GM, Charles Barkley & their fanbase believed they could do it. Atleast the Magic won a Finals game this go around with D12 in the middle! Superman Shaq DIDN'T win a Finals game in his first trip at the very same age of 23. That's right, D12 1, Shaq 0 in their first Finals appearance.

Yes, D12 needs a ton of improvement in his offensive game. Everybody knows this, including D12. The Lakers played sick defense on D12 the whole series. They showed him multiple fronts. Double teaming when he got the ball, sometimes even triple teaming him. Try getting good shots off when you're being triple teamed. Yes, D12 did block a Finals record 9 shots in Game 4!

The Magic loaded the roster w/ perimeter making them matchup nightmares for most teams and it all starts with D12 being such a DEFENSIVE force! Magic signed Rashard to open the floor for D12 by taking the power forward away from the paint & being able to help on D12 to help his limited offense! D12 the leading rebounder & shot blocker in the game! Winning starts with DEFENSE!! Magic were a elite defensive team this season. I'm not sure where they finished in the Top 3, but it might have been Number 1!

Keith, DWade & the Heat didnt get past the Hawks.

GOAT, why are you picking on Jam's mouth guard? Watch his eyes & see where he's going with the ball. Also, you're arguing the Magic didnt have to go thru "great teams" to get to the Finals?? They played horrible offensively vs the 76ers & won the series 4-2. Both of the 76ers wins came on shots at the buzzer. If 76ers miss those 2 shots then its a series sweep.

Moving on to the statements regarding Garnett-less 62 win defending Champions Celtics. Garnett missed about 25 games & they still won that many games! Had Garnett been on the court for those games, the C's probably would have had the most wins this season again. Magic beat them on their home floor in a Game 7. The C's were 32-0 when being up 3-2 in a playoff series. 32-1 anyone? The Magic made history right there but lets keep going shall we? Who is to say Magic couldn't beat them w/ Garnett? I love Garnett's game, but it could have happened. Here is why I say this. Garnett's back up was Big Baby Davis. Remember him? Yeah, he was the guy that stepped up HUGE in that series in Garnett's absence hitting the buzzer beater in Game 4. He put up close to the same numbers that Garnett might have. Garnett is a superstar & I'm sure you will argue that. Garnett wasnt putting up the big numbers this season. He was wearing down. Now w/ Garnett, the C's bench improves by having Baby there coming off the pine. Yes, it would have been a tough series, but Magic still could have won it.

Magic then beat the team with the BEST record in the reg season in the 66 win Cavs led by the MVP LeBaby & Coach of the Year in 6 games in the Eastern Conference Finals. 5 on 1? Not the Magic's problem that "All-Star" Mo Williams didnt show up for the series. Really, 3rd scorer Big Z didnt either. Delonte West played the 2nd best for the Cavs in the ECF. Yes, the Magic do have a better team than the Cavs but this is a team game, correct?

If the Magic had pulled the trifecta of beating 3 60+ win teams in the playoffs, that would have been a FIRST! So instead they end their year by tieing that record of beating 2 60+ win teams in one postseason. What do you have to say now, haters?

BTW, D12's fave superhero is Batman.

Koko said...

Then call him fucking Batman. You can throw out all the stats you want, my only point is that he doesn't deserve to be called Superman.

That should be reserved for the next Jordan, or possibly LeBron in the next few years.

It's totally wasted on Howard.

Lets call him Wonder Woman!

Double S said...

Batman can't fly. Superman Dwight Howard can.

maybe his invisible jet was parked infront of the basket the last few games and thats why his free throws weren't going in? Hahahahaha

Koko said...

AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHh!!!!!!

Dat's a good one!!

Kokos, you're calling the strongest man in the NBA a girl? Really? Say it to his face.

Koko said...

Fine by me, hopefully he'll hit me and I won't have to work ever again.

not just any girl....WONDER WOMAN! She has super strength and stuff! Strongest man in the nba? Did Shaq retire!
