Goodbye Michael.

Posted by Koko

Michael Jackson. That name triggers a spinning rolodex of images and sounds in just about every single person. The world didn’t only lose a music legend yesterday; it lost the most famous celbrity in the world. There are only a handful of people whose death could have provoked the kind of world wide show of emotions that fans and non fans endured when they heard the King of Pop was dead at age 50.

Just how famous was Michael Jackson? Even with his professional career in decline over the last 15 years, there’s still not one individual on planet Earth that could say they were more famous than Michael. The man was loved, hated, and sometimes both by not just millions, but billions of people.

Just about everyone was a Michael Jackson fan at sometime in their lives, even if they didn’t want to admit it. Somewhere in your closet or under the seat of an old car is a cassette tape or CD case of one of his albums.

No doubt the man was eccentric. Most geniuses are thought to walk the thin line between brilliance and lunacy. And a musical genius he was. He also set the standard for what it means to be a superstar. Much like the other MJ, Michael Jackson set the bar so high it may never be reached again. He pioneered the category of popular music and created a dance style so unique that it can never be duplicated, only mimicked. He broke down racial walls by being one of the first black artists played on MTV, then he legitimized and brought the channel to its highest popularity with the templates that all music videos are built on today.

Musical molds were not the only kind he built. Jackson’s “We Are The World,” campaign was the seed for Live Aid and other large, organized, charitable foundations. He donated millions to starving children and families in 3rd world countries. Also, he included philanthropic overtones in much of his music, including helping those in need and saving the planet from ourselves.

Then there’s the other side of his fame . . . the legal troubles and accusations of child molestation, the extremely odd behavior, plastic surgery, failed marriages, and not to mention his own very troubled and abusive upbringing. For Michael Jackson to have walked just one day in the shoes of an everyday Joe would have been every bit as jarring as one of us getting up on stage and moonwalking in front of millions of fans. Was he a victim forced into the kind of life that could produce nothing else than a social recluse? Perhaps, but that would never excuse the accusations of his abusive behavior with children, accusations that he was acquitted of in a court of law. However, an acquittal for a person of his wealth and stature will never silence the very loud whispers that will unfortunately ghost his legacy for a long time to come.

I am no conspiracy theorist, but part of me wants to believe that this is all part of some elaborate hoax. Michael’s finest choreographed routine ever. The perfect escape for him to finally find the privacy and piece he has never experienced. Think about it, if you could pick just one person in the world with the resources, motive and skewed sense of reality it would take to pull something like this off, who would you pick? Fortunately or not, my left-brain will not let me engulf myself with grand delusions. We don’t live in a fairy tale or a movie. The coldness of reality keeps shocking my nerves to the fact, he is gone.

Yeah, bad day to die to say the least.

20 out of the top 25 albums on Amazon right now are Michael Jackson albums, including the top 15 in a row. Unbelievable.

How crazy would it be if Thriller enters the Billboard Top 10 one more time.

Not to mention the fact that my entire dance repetoir was ripped off from Michael. he he.
What is kind of funny is that people under 25 years old probably have no clue how big Michael was . No clue. He was easily the most famous person of all time (at least while he was living. Jesus Christ would probably give him a run for his money, but he became a lot more popular after he died.)
Nobody is even close to being the global icon that Michael was. I just hope people don't remember him for the wierd masks and child molesting. That would be a shame.

yea lets not focus on the negative like molestation, BIG DEAL!

I would also not like this too over shadow the all new edition of the G.O.A.T top 5! can u put that ontop of the michael jackson post koko?

Yeah, maybe you should retake that test Goat, you might beat my 20.

True Regs, younger people can't know just how big he was in his prime mostly due to the fact that they have no frame of reference. Michael was our litmus test to all things before our time. Like when my parents told me about The Beatles and Elivis, Michael was the frame of reference to just how famous they were. Today's youth does not have an icon that trancends the world like Jackson, Elvis or The Beatles.

However, those shots of the enourmous stadiums packed to the brim for his concerts are still quite impressive and should tell the tale pretty well to future generations.

Very Well Done Koko.

Yes, He is the all time biggest Icon in the World. At his peak he was so powerful everyone around the world loved him.

I remember people would pass out and they would show clips of girls trembling and breaking down crying when they would just see him getting out of his limo at some event.......

Can You imgaine what an everlasting Icon he would have been if he would have died about 10 or 15 years earlier.....before he got really creepy and strange?

Never Never Land would be 10 times more popular a place to visit than Graceland.

It still might be Keith, Graceland only became a museum after Elvis' death. I'm sure the company that owns Neverland Ranch has some pretty big plans to make it a museum.

People tend to forget the bad and remember the good after someone dies. Unless you're like Hitler or something. I'm sure thousands will visit when they open it up.

And this is just the beginning. I'm sure he had an unfinished album going so expect some Tupac like records coming out plus some kind of "Ultimate" album with all of his hits. Even though he has like 4 or 5 greatest hits albums already.

GOAT, if you were Farah Faucett, you'd be dead too.

Facebook members, look at my MJ post today that has 45 comments currently. I went for the MJ is a pedophile card & was killed by my friends. Yes, I loved MJs music in the 80's but then he turned really wierd!

Just heard Crash on 101.1 ask who now takes the title as World's Wierdest Man?! His first thought is Tom Cruise.

Koko, nice job but he's a gay, pedophile wierdo to me.

People are such hippocrits. No doubt he was great and probably didn't touch any of those kids but when Mike was alive all anyone did was bash him and make fun of him. Now that he's dead everyone is suuchhh a big fan! Like Martin Bashir who was saying how great he was the other night, mean while he stabbed him in the back when he was alive. If u didn't care about him before he died don't pretend like u do after. Hey double s, is a "gay pediphile" worse then a "straight pedifile"? just wondering?

Did he really break down racial barriers to be on MTV. I don't think that was a big deal in the mid 80's to be black and on tv? especially in music.

Yeah, I have mixed emotions when thinking about MJ. One think though, he had great music.

I agree with G.O.A.T about Faeah Faucett. They had this huge pic of Michael on the front page and a little o'l one of Farrah to the side.

GOAT, I just dont get why if somebody is a pedophile then they're not referred to as gay also. To me, man on boy, penis on penis = gay.

Anonymous said...

i'm just saying a pediphile is wrong cause its someone who likes little children whether there gay or not doesn't make it any worse. Its not the gay aspect is irrelevant.

Big deal, you get in more trouble for killing a dog or not paying your taxes than touching children. USA!USA!
I had a white glove back in the 80's. Michael was the shit! I just hope he never touched any of those kids. If he did, I hope he burns in hell.

He did break racial barriers on MTV, there were hardly any black artists with videos being shown unitl he came along.

I'm not saying MTV was intentionally not showing black videos, but it just became more of the norm to see black artists with videos after Michael came along.

And yeah you're right Goat, there are a lot of hypocrites out there. But I think what's really going on is extreme guilt. Now that he's gone, everyone is realizing how bad he's been treated over the last 15 years and just how amazing his talent was and the degree to which we all took him for granted.

I never stopped being a fan. I don't think he ever molested a child, inappropriate behavior sure, but not molestation. I've had Beat It and Smooth Criminal on my Ipod since it was invented. I even remember when we went to Target to get the History album that first weekend and mom and dad were pissed about that "kick me, kike me" lyric. Good times.

Anonymous said...

haha, kike kike kike kike kike! Love that lyric. So technically i am right and he did not really breaking a barrier, now did he!

Koko said...

No you're not right. He did break a barrier, just not an intentional one. It was still important though.

Don't forget the "Jew me, sue me" line too. Classic.

Anonymous said...

no there was not a barrier! no one was keeping black people off mtv! A "barrier" means somethings or someone is blocking it! There was no blockage!

Koko said...

Whatever, it was a subliminal barrier. And how do you know no one was keeping black people off?
There could have been some racist program directors that only wanted glam band videos because black people are not really rock and roll. Pop was not fully accepted. MTV had mostly a rock image back then. So getting a black person who did pop music on MTV was a breakthrough. I win, as usual.

Do you like that Michael graphic I made, I've been selling T-shirts of it on Ebay? Sold 5 so far.

Prosthetic Johnson said...

Love the graphic Koko. lol....I forgot about all that lyric stuff. I don't remember being such a big impact in the jewish world. or maybe I was asleep. If Michael says racial slurs, it was for a good reason. But fuck Mel Gibson's sorry ass. that racial fuck! Michael was also known for constantly grabbing his crotch.

Anonymous said...

I don't know if people at mtv were trying to keep black people off but neither do u and I didn't make the comment. What the fuck is a subliminal barrier? Your really not that bright, there were no "significant" racial barriers in music by the mid 80's. They were playing other black artists. Lionel Richie, Run DMC, etc. Once again I win cause I am better then u in every way.
