Goodbye Michael.

Posted by Koko

Michael Jackson. That name triggers a spinning rolodex of images and sounds in just about every single person. The world didn’t only lose a music legend yesterday; it lost the most famous celbrity in the world. There are only a handful of people whose death could have provoked the kind of world wide show of emotions that fans and non fans endured when they heard the King of Pop was dead at age 50.

Just how famous was Michael Jackson? Even with his professional career in decline over the last 15 years, there’s still not one individual on planet Earth that could say they were more famous than Michael. The man was loved, hated, and sometimes both by not just millions, but billions of people.

Just about everyone was a Michael Jackson fan at sometime in their lives, even if they didn’t want to admit it. Somewhere in your closet or under the seat of an old car is a cassette tape or CD case of one of his albums.

No doubt the man was eccentric. Most geniuses are thought to walk the thin line between brilliance and lunacy. And a musical genius he was. He also set the standard for what it means to be a superstar. Much like the other MJ, Michael Jackson set the bar so high it may never be reached again. He pioneered the category of popular music and created a dance style so unique that it can never be duplicated, only mimicked. He broke down racial walls by being one of the first black artists played on MTV, then he legitimized and brought the channel to its highest popularity with the templates that all music videos are built on today.

Musical molds were not the only kind he built. Jackson’s “We Are The World,” campaign was the seed for Live Aid and other large, organized, charitable foundations. He donated millions to starving children and families in 3rd world countries. Also, he included philanthropic overtones in much of his music, including helping those in need and saving the planet from ourselves.

Then there’s the other side of his fame . . . the legal troubles and accusations of child molestation, the extremely odd behavior, plastic surgery, failed marriages, and not to mention his own very troubled and abusive upbringing. For Michael Jackson to have walked just one day in the shoes of an everyday Joe would have been every bit as jarring as one of us getting up on stage and moonwalking in front of millions of fans. Was he a victim forced into the kind of life that could produce nothing else than a social recluse? Perhaps, but that would never excuse the accusations of his abusive behavior with children, accusations that he was acquitted of in a court of law. However, an acquittal for a person of his wealth and stature will never silence the very loud whispers that will unfortunately ghost his legacy for a long time to come.

I am no conspiracy theorist, but part of me wants to believe that this is all part of some elaborate hoax. Michael’s finest choreographed routine ever. The perfect escape for him to finally find the privacy and piece he has never experienced. Think about it, if you could pick just one person in the world with the resources, motive and skewed sense of reality it would take to pull something like this off, who would you pick? Fortunately or not, my left-brain will not let me engulf myself with grand delusions. We don’t live in a fairy tale or a movie. The coldness of reality keeps shocking my nerves to the fact, he is gone.

Prosthetic Johnson Needs Your Help

Calling out to Dojo members on any information you may have about missing Child Actor Prosthetic Johnson. He was last seen in Orlando, FL the weekend of May 24th but has not been seen or heard from since.

Johnson is well known for his famous one liners and wildly popular but short lived Kluge Chronicles.

If anyone has any information on his whereabouts please let us know. Rumors have varied from traveling the countryside selling shoes in an attempt to take over Allen-Edmonds to starting a new temple in Venezuela. None have been confirmed or denied by any sustainable sources.

Great SideKicks

Posted by Keith G.

With the passing of one of the greatest Sidekicks of all time Mr. Ed McMahon I think we should honor him by spurring a greatest sidekicks discussion. I would love to hear everyone's favorite sidekick sports wise and/or Hollywood wise.

And remember, I am not asking for the Best Duo's, but the best sidekicks. I think sidekick can best be described as a complimentary figure. As Rocky says, one that fills in the Gaps of our hero. I think the truly great sidekicks are complementary players or characters that know they are a clear #2 to the #1. They are happy taking a backseat to the leader and they know they know their role. IE....Robin Quivers would not be anyone of note if she didn't know how to be Howards right hand wingwomen........If she ever started her own radio show would anyone listen....no....but as Howards sidekick she is great.

My favorite sports sidekick would have to be Johnny Stockton. One could argue he is one of the greatest of all time and he is the all time leader in assists and steals. But, let's face it I think it was his ability to play a complimentary role to Karl Malone that made him so great. He was the scrapper that set the table and then Malone would do more of the dirty work....neither guy needed the attention but they worked well together and thrust each other together into the elite status of the NBA for a long time.

My favorite character sidekick would have to be Chewbacca slightly edging out Paulie. Chewy was awesome. He didn't even have any one liners but his chemistry and complimentary role to Hans Solo made Star Wars just that much better. Do you think Hans Solo would have been so popular as a sarcastic loner who's small signs of sensitivity and humor towards his lifelong wookie friend made each scene.

My Real life vote goes to the Bear and JW.

Do-Over!

That alley-oops layup miss by Courtney Lee in game 2 of the Finals this year could have changed the entire series. Who knows? Maybe the Magic would have ended up winning the title if Lee makes that shot. All of the timelines and momentum would have changed.

If you were given a magic mulligan and could use it just one time for any game you've ever watched, which game would it be?

If anyone saw the first Joe Buck Live and was actually able to make it through the entire show, you know that the only entertaining thing on the show was Artie Lange trying his best to make Joe Buck watchable. Buck is an amazing bore and for some reason thinks he's actually funny. If not for Artie, no one would even be talking about this show today.

Superman No More.

Posted by Koko

So now that the Magic led by Dwight Howard have been defeated by Kobe and the Lakers, can we please remove the "Superman" moniker from #12's persona please?

It was all fun and games at the slam dunk contests but when the name started to stick with the media, and fans are all holding up the shield, wearing superman shirts, and a giant cape is drapped over the Amway Areana, it's gone way too far.

Dwight Howard is a fine player, but Superman he is not. Only one athlete ever truly earned that nickname. Howard has a long way to go if he's going to be the kind of player that can take over a game. He showed flashes of it in the Cleveland series but then dissapeared in the Finals averaging 4 field goals a game. When he was entering the arena for game 5, a reporter asked him how important is this game in his career. Howard answered, "I havn't thought about it." Rivetting stuff. The sad part is that I believed him.

Maybe he'll get there someday, but hopefully this loss will force him to retire his cape until he learns how to use it.

So after seeing the Hangover I wondered if there were any other films Dan Finnerty's "Dan Band" had snuck into. Turns out this is the same guy playing the Bat Mitzvah singer in Starsky and Hutch. Also directed by Todd Phillips who directed both The Hangover and Old School. Phillips says that Finnerty is his good luck charm.

Can you believe this guy is going to be putting people into temporary Hibernations legally?

First off....a Big Dojo Congratulations to Richard "Doc" Guttierez for passing his Test and becoming official........we will be sad to see you go but we know the medical community needs you more than the Dojo.

Ok, enough gay posting.......I sure Hope Mikey or Koko can find a way to bash Rich to bring him back to reality.

Anyways, Is ANBYBODY going to watch the game in a public setting and possibly with a few adult beverages tonight? Besides Our local Magic rep Sully who is probably going to the game.

Liz has a posse gathering downtown but she won't be hanging long so I don't want to be left with a bunch of girls when she leaves. If anbody wants to watch the game tonight let me know.....I am willing to gather at a house, bar, an alley, whatever to hang and watch the game. I'm open to suggestions...............

Let's Party

Posted by Keith G.

Tiger Woods is Ready....are U?

Maybe I was out of town and that is the reason I don't feel all swept up in the fact that Orlando is about to host Game 3 of the NBA Finals. I tried to get myself excited for this fact, but in watching Games 1 and 2 I felt like I was just watching another NBA finals....every once in awhile I would remember that technically......this is our one and only local Professional sports team and they are in the NBA Finals.........Where "Amazing happens" by the way.

Or maybe it is the fact that I have lived in Orlando for over 5 years now and I think I only know one real Magic fan (Nice Job Sully!). I hope I have not offended anybody...but my tally is still at 1. Anyways, I have decided to jump on the bandwagon and embrace the Magic's Amazing run. I guess if this doesn't say this is big time I don't know what does. I read this in this mornings paper:

Orlando City Council voted Monday to keep the booze flowing an extra hour after Tuesday and Thursday nights' games. The temporary extension will allow bars in Orlando to serve alcohol until 3 a.m. instead of 2 a.m., and to stay open until 4 a.m. They also have voted to allow Gators Dockside bar the same rights after the Cobra Kai complete their championship season later this month.

City leaders called it an "economic development" plan, as it helps businesses to separate patrons from their money.

Mayor Buddy Dyer doesn't want any sloppy drunks, though.
"We've extended the hours of celebration by one hour ... but we ask that everybody celebrate responsibly," Dyer said.

Okay Mayor......that is the plan. Give us an extra hour to drink and we won't get drunk (wink wink). I mean it's one thing to say we have extended happy hour an extra hour.....but it's another thing to say we have extended bar time an hour but please don't get sloppy. Has anybody here ever NOT been wasted at bar time? Maybe it's just me but I cant really recall many times in my life I was sitting in a bar at 2:15 AM not drunk thinking I wish they could extend it a little while longer so I can get another diet coke.

Well back to my attempt to discuss Orlando Magic basketball. Don't get me wrong I love basketball and get pumped for the NBA finals every year. But I would have thought if the Local team was in it the finals would have felt different. Maybe it will...I'm keeping my fingers crossed hoping the excitement builds over the next day.

So, some of my questions after a few games. Did I miss something while I was gone and JJ Reddick turned into a premier player? How come he was playing so many minutes last game when he was clearly not producing?

When did Rashard Lewis turn into a clutch player? He was lights out......but what's up with the extended goattee? I remember I attempted one of those in college....looking back it was pretty lame and ugly on me but oh well....we all do those things. Rashard is welcome to experiment as well....only He is a multi million dollar athlete on TV....on one of the worlds biggest stage......is that how he wants himself to be remembered?

How come most people get up and shave for work but these guys that are on TV....HD TV to boot don't bother shaving. I'm not complaining I'm just guessing that if I was going to be on a world wide broadcast I would think one of these guys spouse, family member, agent, TV exec would subtly hint "Hey I bought you this new great Mach III razor...you should try it out." Does Pau Gasol really think he looks cool with a wooly mamouth look?

Anyways, just my five cents..........Go Magic!!!!

Best QB of All Time?

Posted by Keith G.

Well, with the rumors swirling again with Richard's favorite topic of Brett Favre....I thought it would be a prominent time to discuss this website I found. It breaks down rationally the top 10 QB's of all time much like Koko did a while back. However, this list will surprise you and I am curious to hear the Dojo's reaction.

Yes, I know we are the heart of the NBA Finals.....but you can't resist a good old fashioned Football Debate. Hmmmm....Eli does not appear on this radar screen.

Salary Cap: Yay or Nay?

Posted by Koko

The Nate McLouth trade by the Pirates for 3 minor leaguers got my wheels spinning. How would I feel about that trade if I were a Pirates fan? Pretty pissed off I guess. Like my time, passion and money was going to a franchise that did not have winning as its top priority. If you're a Pirates fan, looking over the ledge and considering a nice relaxing death jump is probably not far from the forefront of your sports related consciousness. But then to add a squeeze of lemon juice to the fresh paper cut you get on a daily basis watching Sportscenter, the team goes and trades your best young player for 3 more unproven minor leaguers who, if they mature into good prospects, will then be added to the bottomless bag of trade bait that is the Pittsburgh Pirates.

So would a salary cap help a team like the Pirates? Would it help baseball in general? Before you yell "YES" at the top of your lungs, think about it. If there were a cap in baseball, there would have to be a minimum as well. Would you expect your team to just go and spend the maximum they can to get good players? Sure you would, but that would not be the reality. Teams that have owners similar to the Pirates are a "bottom line" type of bunch. And there are plenty of them in sports. Owners like Steinbrenner, Cuban, and the Maloof bros. are the minority. Of course all owners want their teams to win, but not for the same reasons. In order to be a great sports franchise owner, you have to put the bottom line as your second priority. Not an easy task for billionaires. They were groomed to protect and serve the almighty dollar their whole lives.

Teams that have that "win first" kind of ownership would probably benefit from a salary cap so they can try to be on an equal playing field with the Yanks, Sox, Mets and Dodgers, but there would still be an awful lot of teams not willing to drop profit for W's. Would the salary cap really equal the playing field, or would it just equal the playing field amongst the teams already spending top dollar on player contracts? Teams not making the revenue they need would still not spend the maximum under the cap while teams that sign checks to the limit would continue to sign the big free agents. So while the league would definitely be different, it would not be groundbreaking.

Many would say, what about the NFL? They have the cap and it seems like everything is rainbows and lucky charms, right? Not so much. While the league has plenty of parity to go around, it does not mean the cap is screwed on tightly. The concept is good, but like communism, it does not take into account the human factor. As the league and the owners prosper under the cap, the players' resentment grows. Veteran contracts are canceled without warning and draftees that have not taken a single snap get $30 million signing bonuses. The NFL cap will not last past the next CBA. We'll probably get some kind of lockout with both sides calling the other greedy until a compromise can be reached.

Back to baseball, is this really what we want; a cap that will act like a band-aid on a volcano? The cap is a vicious circle. The real reform needs to be in ownership. Teams need owners that can turn a profit but at the same time not be afraid to lose some of that profit for glory. Teams need owners who are also fans. Teams need owners who instead of looking at their franchises as just an asset on their spreadsheet, look at them as what they truly are . . . baseball teams.

Finals Game 1 commentary

Go Lakers Pictures, Images and Photos 100 magic Pictures, Images and Photos 75

Magic fans, our worse fear has been realized. Odom showed up for the game ready to play. Bynum was productive when he was in the game. We don't even have to talk about Kobe. He was phenominal in the 2nd & 3rd Q's. Lakers outrebounded Magic by 14. Odom had 14 rebounds. Ouch.

1st Q went great for the Magic. Magic players didnt look scared of the big stage & came out strong. No jitters that I could see. Hedo was aggressive & the ball movement was good opening up open shots. I thought Magic were going to win the game. Looking back on it though, Dwight was getting beat to the boards which we dont ever expect to see. He did put a post on facebook saying he was nervous so maybe he was. Welcome back Jam! Great first few minutes from him. The outside shots didnt fall the rest of the game.

Then along came Kobe & the rout was on. In the end it was all about this guy 2009 NBA Finals Avatar-LA Lakers Pictures, Images and Photos

Dare I say Gortat played the best for the Magic last nite? 8 rebounds, 4 blocks & 2 steals! On to Game 2.
