Everybody's Favorite Thanksgiving tradition of the Rocky Marathon that the Versus network aired was riveting for me because for the first time I saw a Rocky marathon perfectly broad casted where they transitioned from Rocky I to Rocky II without replaying the last scene and directly going into the new scene from the end of Rocky.
Anyways, something has been gnawing at me since watching the latest marathon. I implore the Dojo to help answer these burning questions for me so I can sleep more soundly at night. First, I still can't believe Rocky fought Drago for "Nothing" on Christmas day in Russia???????? How come he didn't just donate his purse to some type of charity??????? I mean the Russian Premier must have banked from that fight. The Pay Per View, The tickets....I mean the stadium was absolutely packed!
Also, Ironically after Rocky gave his riveting speech and more or less helped bring down the Cold War, what Happened to Ivan Drago? Ivan was undefeated and was a pure wrecking machine. Yet, we never heard from him again. Did he retire? Do you think he left Russia and went to the United States to pursue a boxing career or become a movie star???? Or do you think the Russian premier was so pissed at him for embarrassing the country that he exiled him to work in some factory and be an example to the rest of communist Russia on what happens to you when you fail him??????
Next, When Rocky decided to begin his training regimen in the Mountains of Russia do you think it was appropriate to start his Training session of a 25 mile run wearing Snow Boots? Also, Do you think Sly got the idea for Cliffhanger when he was on top of the Mountain?
Taking a step backwards what about the infamous Clubber Lang? This guy was also a one man wrecking crew, almost a "Iron Mike" like fighter. After Rocky finally beat him what happened to his career? I mean Rocky went on to defend his title and we never heard from Clubber again. How come Apollo didn't decide to fight Clubber after he disrespected him in the ring, what Apollo didn't have it in him to Fight Clubber but he decided to fight a much younger and more destructive Drago. I mean a Clubber V Apollo fight would have been a big ticket draw.
Do you think because it was the 80's that Clubber beaten and broken down got a nasty drug habit and fell out the public spotlight? Or did he pursue an acting career? I mean there is no way his boxing career was over? I still think Clubber could have beaten Tommy Gun pretty hand idly. Or wouldn't a Drago V Tommy Gun fight been a great fight?????
I mean nowadays fighters retire and unretire on a regular basis. Why did we never hear from Drago and/Clubber Lang after they lost to Rocky???? At least we know what became of Spider Ricoh after he lost to Rocky. He became a beaten down man and got lost on the streets until he found God and then Rocky was nicest enough to let him eat for free at his restaurant. Do you think Drago and Clubber fell to a similar fate but were too proud to ask Rock for help?
That's is my weekend thoughts and hope the Dojo as some more deep thoughts/Answers for me. Good luck and I look forward to your musings.

My deep thoughts are that it must be a slow morning at the Allen Edmunds shop.
I say Clubber Lang vs. Drago would have been the fight to watch !
Dude, have you been using acid? Where do you get all that free time?
dude WOW!
Drago was banished to Siberia, due to his poor performance. He is working in a diamond mine or running an oil rig. Drago did do some special work for the KGB, but he was a liability because he always had that bitch trainer with him.
Clubber is a school teacher in Zimbawae teaching English, he also runs a boxing academy over. He is having a difficult time finding anything but feather weights to fight in his school. His prize fighter is Abudud Rzasdeu
I know exactly what happened Keith.
First of all, after Clubber lost to Rocky he was so embarrassed that he talked all that shit and then lost so fast, he realized that he did not have the eye of the tiger anymore. Clubber had the belt for all of like 6 months. He then followed a very similar path as his real-life counterpart Mr. T. Television producers saw this guy would be great in movies and TV, so Clubber went on to become a popular Hollywood niche actor. It would have been great to see Rocky watching TV in Rocky IV and see a commercial for a show starring Clubber.
As for Drago, there was no tolerance for disrespect during the hammer and sickle days. Drago lifted his superior in the air and threw him into the crowd. Then on top of it, he lost. I'm quite sure he was sent to Siberia, never to be heard from again. Plus all of the new steroid test that followed in the 90's would have surley destoryed his career anyway.
Rocky didn't want any money or even charities being involved in this fight because he had stone cold hatred in his heart for this fight. Like he said, he was willing to die in this fight and Drago had to be willing to do the same. Not really the kind of thing any respectible charity would like to be a part of. For Rocky the whole thing was about revenge, right up until the end where he has the "change" epiphony.
Here's what really did not make any sense at all in Rocky V. Rocky just took out the undefeatable Drago in Russia on Christmas. So what if an accountant stole all his money, can you image all the endorsements he could have done. What company wouldn't want him after the greatest boxing performance of all time. And don't give me the "he's too stupid to read commercials," thing, because that was debunked in the first 10 minutes of Rocky III where you saw his rise to stardom in the montage. Rocky was in all kinds of commercials and even appeared on the Muppett Show.
That's why Rocky V is so awful, made no sense why he had to stay poor. Merchandising alone could have retreived all his cash.
And actually I think I did hear once that when they were doing the mountain scenes in Rocky IV, that Sly did say he'd like to someday do a movie involving mountains.
