The world of baseball betting competition at the professional level is a bit different than say the NBA or NFL. In those sports there are no great disparities between the spending of the top clubs and the worst clubs. But in MLB odds competition the payrolls of the biggest spenders can be five times as much as the lowest spenders.
Granted, money spent does not always equal baseball betting success, but it’s little coincidence that the Yankees (the biggest spenders in the MLB odds) are the World Series champs and the Pirates, Royals and Orioles (some of the lowest spenders in baseball betting) finished 2009 with some of the worst records in baseball betting.
So in that context of payroll, we can get a good idea of which teams are going to stink again in the 2010 season. The Pirates have to be included on any short list of MLB odds cellar dwellers for this season as the team’s payroll remains miniscule by baseball betting standards, it added no real talent in the off season and it’s been nearly two decades since the team had a winning record.
Throw the Nats in this group of dungeon dwellers as well. Even with the new golden armed rookie Steven Stausborg, this is an awful team and one that should once again finish last in the NL East. The Royals, playing in one of the smallest markets in the MLB odds and traditionally very bad should also once again vie for the worst record in the Bigs. But the very worst team in MLB, look for the Orioles to be at the bottom of the heap when the 2010 dust finally settles.
Whoa....Johnny. In depth comment and reserach here.
Your Comment deserves a post all to itself.
I think we need a Johnny Blaze 2010Baseball predictions column.
Great post
Keith, you truely are a loser. Kick a man while they are down. Too bad it was only one game. The Yankees lost the first three or four games to the Redsox last year but we all know the end of that story.
I argree with you Johnny about spending equals wins. There are a few mid level teams fighting to make it to the post season. The Twins, Rays,Rangers and Rockies to name a few. All of these teams don't spend as much as the Yankees Dodgers, Redsox, etc but are making an effort to keep their best guys on the roster.
All I gotta say to the Yanks fans is the obvious...pitchingpitchingpitching...great start to the season opener but the pill got tougher to swallow down the stretch. To lose in Beantown during a pitching meltdown to start the season against your rivals is..well..it just sucks. Both teams are great clubs but at the end of the day and at the end of the season it all comes down to who choked the most with that talent pool. Chalk the first choke up to the Yanks...thar she blows!
Yes Johnny, the Yankees blew it last night. In the end, the Redsox played a better game. The Yankees middle relieving pitchers stunk bad. Chang Ho Park is a new guy who can easily be out of a job if it keeps up and Marte has been shaky.
It was a great game and a great game to start off the season. The Redsox and Yankees management thrive off of last nights results. More marketing and more money to help their brands become super powers. Genius! I also liked how they brought out Pedro Martinez to throw the first pitch.
That's all I got to say about that.
Did you see Pedro's ceremonial first pitch got hit for a homerun by Hideki Matsui!!! AAAAHHHHH!!!
only 1 game in of a 162 game season and already the anti-yankee nation is grasping at straws to convince themselves that they will not have to watch another parade around NYC at the end of the season. But you will and ya gonna LOVE IT!!! The Red Sux pitching didn't look great either!
This Yankee line-up is gonna be special. This team is gonna mirror the 98' team. There smart, gonna take a lot of pitches. Over a 100 wins this year!
So it shall be written, so it shall be done!!!
Wake me up when it's July.
Heyward!!
How was Gardner's throw that was supposed to go to homeplate not get a mention here? It was the worst throw EVER!!! He missed homeplate by what, 50 feet?? I laughed my ass off at him.
Well Hello Double S????
Where have you been?
I was almost going to issue an APB on you......where were you for the Championship Celebration?
Dinger, I was at a Wedding on Fri eve. Koko will have to photoshop me in the Championship photo.
