Prime Time Draft?

Posted by Keith G.

Well, The Prime Time Draft day experiment was fairly entertaining. I enjoyed the fact it was 1 round to only have to take in and the excitment of a few hours was worth it.

However, ESPN was atrocious in their coverage. Is it me or has Chris Berman just become uncomfortably painful to watch anymore. He seems like he hates everybody and his is trying to overcompensate for something. I don't know what was the deal but that panel was horrible. John Gruden saved them a bit but other than him it seemed like it was a panel of us at Gators after 10 pitchers when everybody is rambling and trying to talk over each other. Just curious to hear if I was the only one. But personally, I think it is time for Boomer to step down. Does he have part ownership in ESPN.......why does ESPN let him rule over NFL at the Network? He is not a good host anymore.

Also, What a great place for Dez Bryant to land. He is going to have some big numbers in Dallas. Tebow to the Broncos? Hmmmmmmm.......

Rob McShiper can we get a recap on your expert opinions.

I fucking hate the new draft format. I hate having it on a Thursday night. The draft is one of my favorite events of the year and I found myself speeding home last night after Zac's game and I still missed the first 4 picks.

Why mess with a great thing? Why?
People have lives and have to work on Fridays. The draft, in some families is a right of passage for their kids and they can't stay up to watch it on a school night. People on the west coast are fucked because it started at 4:30 p.m. while they are still at work. What a complete disaster.

Also having only one round sucks because right when you are getting into it, it is over. If your team doesn't have a first round pick, you are not watching.

Espn coverage became so terrible that I switched to NFL Network and that was so bad that I went downstairs and watched it on the computer.
Berman was so uncomfortable, but the worst was NFL Network, who had this guy Jason La Canfora stationed near the podium asking the teams as they were taking their picks up, who they were taking and acting like he was scooping everyone by announcing it 10 seconds before the commisioner did. What fun is that? The speculation is half the fun.

Those fuckheads ruined one of my favorite days and to top it off, before I could even get a buzz, the draft was done.

Bulshit , for the few sportsfans who actually enjoy the draft like me , I much prefered having that all day saturday to fullfill all my draft coverage.
The key picks are in the second through fourth rounds and we are gonna miss them all.
Berman is a fat shit nugget that just renewed his contract in ESPN , I heard a lot of the other anchors hate him cause he treats them all like crap.

It all depends on the numbers. If it got high ratings they're going to keep doing it. And it probably did.

Berman is definitely an asshole. It's been proven again and again through little clips that have gotten out while he thought the cameras were off or no one was recording. He's very abusive to the staff.

ditto; Berman is a grump but his contract just got renewed so forget that, for now. I also hated the panel, except for Gruden. All of them just seemed irritated and no one agreed on anything..note to self guys, your ego is not your amigo. They made themselves look like children and the whole event suffered due to that fact.

The part that pissed me off the most was seeing players before they were drafted wearing caps already. I knew almost 1-2 minutes before the Commish announced what team drafted who. Maybe I haven't watched the draft in as much depth before b/c it wasn't prime time but I would have rather listened to the draft.

Also, the panel had no idea what teams were trading picks until after it was visually displayed on the "On The Clock" screen. Just like any old product, the NFL needs to retool the whole draft process coverage. Get back to basics and stop of the sensory overload of analysis and grumpy old men.

Juan hit the nail on the head. I loved it when the draft started at noon and had the first 3 rounds on Saturday and 4-7 on Sunday. I would wake up, grab a lot of beer, eat breakfast while watching sportscenter, tell my wife that today is draft day and she should find something to do with the kids. I would then proceed to watch the draft while drinking and act like a teenage girl with my text message spree. It was awesome.
I understand that most people are not like that and most sports fans will go about their lives with the draft on tv in the background, checking in occasionally to see who has been taken. Then, as their team gets closer, starts to pay more attention. Then after they pick, they go back to their lives.
I get it, but don't alienate the people who love this stuff.

Johnny, Your right on the trade thing. I remember seeing Minnesota traded their pick to Detroit and Berman was babbling about something and Steve Young began babbling about Tebow...and they didn't even mention the fact the trade went down for about 4 minutes by the time the Commish spoke. I think they were talking about Favre and the Vikes QB situation when the Vikes werent even on the board anymore because they traded their pick to Detroit.

Just Brutal.
