Alright dude. Why even ask people's opinions if you are only going to follow them some of the time? Not a single person on the last blog even put Harry Potter in the top 5.
Newsflash!!!da da da da da da
The reason why the box office numbers are so good for these movies is the same reason why the biggest tours of the summer are the"Jonas Brothers" and "Hannah Montana". Because kids between the ages of 7 and 13 are too young to go to movies by themselves so they need their uninterested parents to buy tickets to go to the show. There are also very few things that this age group is interested in, so they either go to a concert with their parents or go to a movie.
It is a smart business plan to make money. I don't think, however, that anyone would list Miley or the Jo Bros as 2 of the top ten musical groups of all time. So how could you list movies that target the same audience anywhere near the top ten.
As usual Regs, your view has the peripheral range of David Wright's batting helmet.
I asked everyone's opinion and took it into consideration in making the list. That doesn't mean I'm a robot. My opinion counts as well.
Both Keith and Joey said that Potter does belong on the list, so your argument is that it just doesn't belong in the top 5? From your opinon of the movies, it doesn't sound like a 3 place drop would mean that much. You think they're aweful, so why would it matter if Potter is in 3rd, 7th, or 9th place. You just seem to be totally closed minded to them and wright them off as "kid stuff."
The fact that you compare the Potter films to the Jonas Bros or Mily Cyrus completely shows your hand and tells me you know nothing of the movies.
You don't make the kind of headway the Potter series of books and movies has made on kid approval alone. Many adults have purchased the books and seen the films for their own entertainment. They're definitely doing something right, because I really dislike the "fantasy" genre. However the storytelling of good vs evil in the Potter films is some of the best I've ever seen. And yes I can totally understand what they are saying. I actually enjoy English accents.
One more thing, your view of kids interests disturbs me. I was into a lot more than just movies and concerts from the ages of 7-13. In fact I didn't go to concerts at all, unless it was a comedy concert. I really think you need to give that age group a little more credit than that.
Although Mario Puzo had 7 or 8 novels (off the top of my head), the Godfather movies came from only one book. Parts I and II were inspired by the Godfather novel not novels and part III came from Puzo's ass, jk.
I can only go off of experience. I don't think there are demographic charts on movies (I could be wrong but i've never seen them). I saw 3 of the Harry Potter movies with my boys. Each of them on opening weekend of their respective showings. The theatre was packed all three times.
So, although not a huge sampling, I feel like I saw enough to intelligently weigh in. Figure 180 people to a theatre times 3, equals about 540 people.
Out of those 540 people there were a grand total of 3 demographics that I saw.(other than very few stragglers)
1. kids between the age of 7-13
2. Parents of those kids.
3. complete and utter dorks who looked like this was their first light of day out of their parents basement in a year.
That is what I saw. I am sorry. I also know it doesn't include every single person. But neither does the Nielson Ratings. Seeing 3 different movies in Altamonte Springs gives me at least some idea of the kinds of people who are into that stuff.
Nice catch on that Scotty, thanks I changed it to "novel."
Regs I don't assume you take your boys out to late night showings. You probably saw early shows so of course it's full of kids.
The thing is the midnight showings are also packed and full of adults.
Yes there are demographics on everything, it's how they figure out when and where to show their commericals.
And if you want to disparage dorks or nerds, go right ahead. But their dollars count every bit as much as yours and it seems from the large percentage of sci-fi/fantasy material that Hollywood is producing, they are much more interesed in what nerds want to see than any other faction.
I saw the movies Saturday afternoon.
I have a problem with it being ranked so high because of, what I think, is limited appeal. I have never heard a person say that Rocky sucks or the Godfather II was horrible or Pirates of the Caribean was terrible. Never. Or any other movie on your list.
Indiana Jones-Nope
Star Wars- No
Vacation- Certainly not (christ, I got my fantasy name from Vegas Vacation)
Go down the list and you will find "Harry Potter" and "Lord of the Rings" (which I enjoyed by the way) as the only ones with serious haters. No movie series with that much hatred should be ranked, regardless of box office
Well all I can tell you Regs is that perhaps your movie radar has a limited range.
I've heard and read tons of comments from people that absolutely hate Star Wars, Pirates, Indy and Godfather.
Every movie has its critics no matter how good it is. You will never find a franchise without a serious amount of haters.
What I find interesting is that the most criticism I've heard towards the Potter films has been from you guys. Everyone else I know either likes or loves the series.
In any case, I did not make the list on personal appeal. If I did that the franchises would be in a completely differnt order and LOTR would not even come close to making a dent. I absolutely loathe those films. But just because I do not like them does not mean I can't respect its place in cinematic history.
It's like hating an athlete. When Jordan was playing, he was the bane of my existance. But of course I know he's the greatest player to ever live.
The Potter series can not be denied as one of the greatest franchises ever. They have all been critically acclaimed and enormously successful at the box office around the world.
Swami Sayz:
Come on, Rocky as Number 1?
Now we need to do television shows and musical artists. That would be fun, as long as you list Pearl jam as number 1
Yeah, Rocky's gotta be number 1. Only 1 bad movie out of 6. Over $900 million box office. The character is an American icon. Easily the most played series of movies ever. All those movie stations like TNT, TBS, Spike, etc. they play Rocky so much for a reason. It gets ratings every time.
I can't even count the amount of times I've seen a Rocky marathon on TV. It's ridiculous. Stations don't air what they can't sell and Rocky is still the most lucrative franchise being shown today.
It might change someday, but for now, how can you put anything above Rocky as far as a complete franchise goes?
I can do TV easy. Music not so much.
Why don't you do a music list Regs.
I'm gonna throw a ball at your head Koko. Stop picking on David! So if I say Rocky is #1, do I get a BJ from Keith also?
Well Done Koko!!! One of your finer postings.
While I would have no qualms with Star Wars being number one I obviously believe you made the right choice with Rocky.
No other movie has inspired so many people and not to mention been the basic framework for nearly every sports movie since. Every Sports movie since Rocky has tried to capture that "IT" that the Rocky franchise had...but they have never been able to accomplish that....and I beleive it is because of Sly himself. A
At the time Rocky was made no movie company in the world wanted Sly to play Rocky....but he did not back down and his portrayal is what makes Rocky so special.
Whenver, I travel I always wear my Rocky t-shirt and inevitably I get 3 thumbs up, 2 high fives, and countless smiles from passers by. And I always get the obligatory comment from some guy over 40 telling me how he felt when he walked out of the theatre after seeing Rocky for the first time.
Millions of Americans started running and working out inspired from this story.....and I think the egg industry saw a huge upturn in sales.
Overall, I think you nailed the list......again I can't weigh in on LOR or Harry Potter since I have not seen either....but they certainly need to be included in the conversation from their recent popularity.
My only objection is the harsh treatment of Natlional Lampoosn European vacation. That was not a horrible movie......in fact I used to love it and still can't click away from it when it is on. The dude from Monty ptyhon gettin hit on his bike is pure comedy!!!!
keith sometimes i can't even believe that we are related....you haven't seen lotr or harry potter.....at least i have seen all the rocky movies....also you need to give me a list of the lost seasons and stuff that i gave you because i lost my list and can't remember what i have already burned for you......
anyways, koko i appreciate your defense of harry potter and even lotr...and regs i can understand your point of view on harry potter. i was working at the library when the first book came out and it was a mad house. i hated the book so much and i hated all the people who would get pissed at me because we only had 10 copies and the waiting list was 2 months long. i hated everything about the books. then one of my friend's moms made me read the first one and i finished it in one night. it was absolutely addicting and i couldn't stop. now the movies try and put as much of the story as possible into them without becoming too long like some people say lotr is......but since i was a hater originally i can understand why you don't like the movies but koko is correct in saying that there are tons of adults who like the movies as well and they may all be nerds....but there are more nerds in this world than you think. harry potter definitely deserves a spot on the list.
And we learned about the nerds ruling the world in Revenge of the Nerds I, II, III and IV.
damn right johnson!
I didn't say European Vacation was bad, I just said it was the weak link. Yeah there are some really funny moments in there but it's definitely the last one of the series I would choose to watch.
And Rich, what the hell are you talking about?
Great point Prosthetic as always!!!
Yes, I do have Harry And LOR on my list of movies to watch.....LOR more so than Harry. But are these movies that you can watch individually or do you have to start from the first one?
That is my problem with some of these movie franchises...you can't just pick up one without missing something from the previous movie. It is intimidating to think I have to start at 1 and work my way in.
Rocky is such a great franchise because you could watch Rocky IV and love the whole franchise without having the set-up from the previous movies. Yes, maybe Balboa you would need to be aware of the others to understand but that's about it.
But, You are right. I don't know what happened to me from about 2000-2007. I have zero pop culture knowledge. I haven't listened to a new music band in about 10 years and I really didn't see any new movies or TV over that period of my life except sports.
With the help of the Dojo I have expanded my pop culture over the past 2 years.......Great job everyone.
yes keith you need to start at the beginning of lotr because it is all one story....and there are only 3 movies for lotr but harry potter will have 8 when it is all done....so i would suggest start with lotr...i can burn them and send them to you if you want ;)
Keith, I know Joey is family, but I also know you value my opinion.
If you have 9 hours of your life that you would like to shave off with nothing to show, then yes watch the Lord of the Rings. But here's a list of 10 things that you just might enjoy more:
1. Punch yourself in the face.
2. Punch yourself in the face again.
3. Walk to Alaska.
4. Go to Harlem and recreate the opening scene from Die Hard 3.
5. Transfer to Footlocker.
6. Transfer to Ladies Footlocker.
7. Jump head first off a table into a thumb tac.
8. Eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner at a Golden Coral.
9. Tell Liz she's wrong.
10. Watch the 2007 NFC Championship game.
Keith -
for your own safety... i would stay away from #9!!
