That was a horrible call! Not even close. That umpire should be sent to the minors.
And if the Pirates lose the division by 1 game it gets exponentially worse.
BASEBALL NEEDS MORE REPLAY!!!
holy overblown guys! Did you watch the play? The catcher BARELY NICKED the inside of the runner's knee. It was such a wuss tag that it looked like he only got a tiny bit of fabric.
I hate it when umpires automatically call guys out when tags are not applied.
If you are a catcher and the winning run is coming towards you, don't do an ole swipe tag. Stand in front of the plate and tag the runner. You don't need a collision, but make it obvious that you have clearly tagged him.
Granted, the umpire did miss the tiny application of a tag on fabric, but there are far worse calls on a daily basis that go unnoticed.
Oh, and the "butt Pirates" have no chance of catching the mighty Brew Crew, so it doesn't matter
Regs do you ever notice that anytime something overwhelmingly obvious, you just happen to be standing on the other side?
Even the runner knew he was out. If a tag is missed, the runner always signals it right away. He got him and it was incredibly obvious, even if it was a soft tag.
Yes the umpire shoulde always make sure the tag is applied but when it's that close and the guys is beat by a stride and a half, it's a no brainer.
Anyway, the point is that baseball needs replay very badly.
The only thing obvious was that the throw beat him, in fast motion. the tag was definately not obvious at full speed. he barely swipe tagged him.
I agree that they should use instant replay, but in return, the unpires need to enforce some of the rules that are meant to speed up the game, like 12 seconds between pitches. It is a rule that nobody enforces.
Also, I would be totally for an automatic strike zone. Balls and strikes are wayyyyy too subjective for the unpires and varies all the time. Every tv station has a strike zone tracker. How hard would it be to adapt it to the real game. Green light= strike, red light = ball. no arguements
Lugo was safe. Go Braves!
True he didn't tag him by a lot, but even at full speed it looks like he just got him.
What is not obvious is that the tag was definitely missed. Even if you're not sure, it looks like he probably got him, so how the hell can you make the low percentage call? The ump definitely did not see space between the glove and the player, but made the bad call anyway.
He probably just wanted the game over with.
I'm for the robot umpires too, but realistically that's never going to happen in our lifetime. I would settle for automatic replay on close scoring plays and the managers having their own one challenge for anything else.
