Why hasn't Keith pissed on Jeter's parade yet?
After watching that "nice" video, the only thing that comes to mind is how much more impressive what the great Robin Yount accomplished was. Not only was he much younger than jeter when he hit his 3000 th hit, but he also won 2 MVPs at 2 different positions, while not having the distinct advantage of hitting in front of the types of hitters that Jeter hit in front of.
Hats off to Rockin Robin
I know you're just trying to be inflamatory there Regs, but seriously, how in the hell did you get out of high school with those math skills.
Much younger? Yount was 19 days younger than Jeter. And if Jeter didn't get the calf injury, he would have beat him to it easily.
Besides, don't they count age in Wisconsin with the same proportion as animals? You know, since live stock is pretty much part of the family up there.
And by part of the family, I mean sexual intercourse.
Oh and to answer your question Rich, Keith has a Jeter embargo on him right now since the Yanks showed the Brew Crew what it's like to play an actual major league ball club, and swept their asses in brutal fashion.
If only the Yanks could play the National League all year long.
Oh, and here's a great quote for you Rob.
This guy seems to be pretty smart,
“If you play as many games as I did and get as many at bats as I did, then I was eventually going to get to 3,000 hits. It wasn’t until my career was ending did I realize how special it was to reach 3,000 hits, based on how few people had done it. I am more proud of playing as long as I did, then anything. My hits total was the culmination of playing 20 years and being healthy enough to do so.
“I love what I see of Derek Jeter. He is the complete package: a leader, clutch player, and lots of success on baseball’s biggest stage, New York. Being the complete package is something every player dreams of.”
-Robin Yount.
its called being humble. Yount never brought attention upon himself by "dating" celebrities or building 25,000 sq ft mansions or drawing the ire of his boss by going out too much. He just went about his business every day.
As you know, baseball is a team sport. No matter how good you are, you still only bat once out of every 9 times and you are dependent on pitching. Baseball, more than any other sport is defined by what you can control and the limitations that the game has over what you can do to influence the game.
getting 3000 hits is a huge accomplishment. Good job Jeter.
Humble, yes, but that does not separate it from being the truth.
And you're right, a baseball player only comes up once every nine AB's, so on the offensive end, there is a strong limit to what they can contribute. And it's because of that, baseball is the most individual centric of all the team sports. Stats and records mean more in baseball than anywhere else.
And Jeter's teammates have nothing to do with his accomplishment, he's batted at the top of the lineup his whole career. But you can make a strong case that the team he is on has worked against him in MVP voting even though he had 2 seasons in which he deserved it.
Come on. Give me a break. You can't possibly tell me that pitchers don't give Jeter better pitches to hit when they look over and see A-Rod and Tex coming up next?!
I said it is a great accomplishment, but let's not overblow this thing into more than it is. Hitters like Robin Yount and George Brett performed at a much higher level because pitchers were always very careful to not give them good pitches to hit because, for the most part, nobody else in the lineup struck fear in them.
One of the most underated and least talked about skill for managers is making out a lineup. Don't think for a second that they didn't know that Jeter was a good contact / fastball hitter, so they put him in front of the "big guns", so he would see more fastballs and strikes.
I'm not ripping him, I'm just being realistic.
Regs, stop taking crazy pills. They're bad for ya. Jeter got to 3000 hits in over 900 fewer AB's than Yount.
Robin Yount is not as good a player as Derek Jeter, never was and no matter how much revisionist history you create, he never will be.
Jeter is an immortal, his big-time moments are the thing of legend and Hollywood screenplays. And he's a better all-around player than both Yount or Brett.
Your "better pitches" argument is so pathetic. First of all, Jeter already has more walks than Yount and he's played 4 less years. So there goes that well-thought-out argument.
Besides, he's a leadoff hitter for god sake. No matter what lineup a pitcher faces, under no circumstances does he want the first batter of an inning to get on base no matter who it is. But of course that knowledge comes with an inherent understanding of the game, which you are clearly lacking.
And who even knows if Yount could play in New York at all. People like to use New York as a crutch but they sound ridiculous, because doing what Jeter has done in New York only adds to his greatness. How many players have been amazing in other towns only to transform into an utter shell of themselves on the big stage in NYC? The leeway rope is much shorter in New York and maintaining a career at a high level is exponentially more difficult than one in Wisconsin.
Hell, you're own team has a pitcher who shits the bed every time he sees the Statue of Liberty.
Just look at the numbers Regs, they don't lie, Jeter is superior to Yount in every way. Now please stop embarassing yourself with this, I'm starting to feel bad for you.
Yount didn't walk as much because he was forced to swing at pitches outside of the strike zone because teams knew the players after him didn't stand a chance. That's the ultimate team player. He would have easily had way more hits if he had better hitters behind him, because he could have been more selective.
That is very important to any argument. When you don't have to carry your team, it allows you to let the game come to you.
I will predict that once Prince leaves Milwaukee, Ryan Braun will struggle and everyone will say "what's wrong with Braun?" What's wrong with him will be the fact that his security blanket is gone and pitchers can pitch around him.
That's what makes hitters like: Yount, Brett, Pujols, Bonds, Schmidt, Rose, Williams ect stand out.
I put Jeter in the same category as Eddie Murray and Palmeiro as guys who rang up good stats while never being considered a superstar
Ahh hahahahaha! That's fantastic. He was forced to swing at pitches out of the strike zone.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhahahahhaahahha!
Not even Glen Beck would have your back on that statement.
Seriously, I think the batshit from Fox News is starting to penetrate the deeper layers of grey matter. Time to change the channel man.
So your saying Yount tried to hit a homerun everytime up because that's the only way he felt they could score? Because no one else could hit or get on base? If he was getting so many pitches outside the strike zone, why not just take a walk? Sounds like he should have the "Walks record" with sooooo many balls being thrown at him and having suuuuuuch bad players around him.
Swinging at a bad pitch to get a base hit would yield the same result as a walk wouldn't it? So why be forced to swing? Unless he had a big ego and was going for stats? Sounds pretty selfish to me! Be a team player and take the walk hotshot!
You don't need to go to extremes.
Yankee fans act like Jeter is some immortal superstar and he just simply is not. He is a very good player who was put into a great position and took advantage of it. There is nothing wrong with that. That is not a critism.
There is nothing wrong with not having to carry a team. it was the hand that he was dealt.
We don't need to go to extremes?
You wrote that Yount was forced to swing at bad pitches and Jeter is in the same league as Palmeiro and Murray.
Maybe you should take your own advice there.
And we act like he's a baseball immortal because HE IS! I think Yankees fans are a little more qualified at identifiying an immortal when we see one. We've had a lot of experience in that area.
You become an immortal from championships, HOF numbers, and memory burning moments that live forever.
Jeter has multitudes of all three.
Instead of spinning my wheels and you just ignoring solid stats and facts, why don't you take the burden of proof and tell me exactly why he is not an all-time great. Tell me why he is not the greatest career shortstop of all time.
And something a little more than "he was put into a great posiiton" would be nice. So was Joe Montana, Tom Brady, Mickey Mantle, and tons of others, but they all had to perform and become immortal stars on their own merit. Jeter started on the Yanks when they had zero superstars, and that core group of players anchored them through a great era.
Also, not one baseball team has ever won the World Series with just one great player. Sure a player can put the team on his back for a few games or a playoff series (which Jeter has done many times), but if you don't have a complete team with a great pitching staff, you're not winning anything in baseball.
