Who is the Greatest????

Posted by Keith G.

Inspired by a great quote Prosthetic Johnson emailed out to our entire company from the Babe

"With every strike, I get that much closer to my next Home Run"

I found this interesting Wall Street Journal article on the Greatest Yankees of all time. Normally, I wouldn't write about the Yankees but it was an interesting list.

I was a little surprise....more like baffled at the list. Maybe our Yankee fans can clear it up and give their thoughts.

But here is the List.. (Click)
1. Babe
2. Lou Gherig
3. Joe Dimaggio
4. Jeter
5. Yogi
6. Mickey Mantle
7. Reggie Reggie Reggie
8. A-Rod
9. Joe Gordon
10. Ben Henrich

First, The most glaring omission of Donny Baseball and Mo Rivera. Mo is arguably the greatest closer of all time. Also, I don't consider myself a Yankee historian but I never really heard of Joe Gordon or Ben Henrich?

Plus, just goes to show you Yankees are sell outs if they get Reggie on the list for his what...3 or 4 seasons as a hit man for them???

Ah, the '84 Topps, my favorite cards of all time. I'm going to do those next time we win a championship.

As for the list, of course Keith you immediately disparage the Yankees as sellouts for having Reggie on the list. Like the Yankees have anything at all to do with the makeup of the list. I believe you said it was a Wall Street Journal article. Last I heard they do not have any ownership in the Yankees.

I've heard about this list last week and as with all lists, they're totally off.

Mickey Mantle is not only the greatest Yankee of all time but he's the greatest player of all time. If he's not #1, the list is garbage right away.

The list was only for position players, that's why Rivera is not on it. But if you did include pitchers, I'd say Rivera is definitely in the top 5.

Reggie played 5 years and won 2 world series with the Yanks. The definitive years of his career were in pinstripes. He deserves to be on the list but I'm not sure he's top 10, probably somewhere from 11-20.

4. Joe Dimaggio
5. Yogi Berra

I love that '84 card too. I was never fortunate to aquire it in my card collecting days. Regs list is good. Their are so many to chose from. Where would Roger Maris fit? Reggie and A-Rod are in the same catagory in my opinion.

Nice Regs, I'm actually impressed with your list considering all that Yankee-hating Moonshine you downed back in the sticks of Wisconsin.

But here's the real list: (position players only)

1. Mickey Mantle
2. Babe Ruth
3. Lou Gehrig
4. Joe Dimaggio
5. Derek Jeter
6. Yogi Berra
7. Bill Dickey
8. Don Mattingly
9. Bernie Williams
10. Thurman Munson

A-Rod will most definitely enter this list by the end of his career, barring any further revalations.

And in a completely unrelated and unprompted list. These are my FAVORITE Yankees. (pitchers included)

1. Jeter
2. Mantle
3. Mattingly
4. Rivera
5. O'Neil
6. Pettitte
7. Bernie
8. Tino
9. Brosius
10.Guidry

By the end of his career Texiera will most likey be in my favorites list based on his glove alone.

Nice Koko. Most of these guys where on the same team. You can add David Cone, David Wells, and Jorge Posada. I wonder if us being able to SEE them play helps out. Are their numbers better than the older era? The '98 Yankee Team was, if not the best, in the top five. They were average guys who knew the "secret" to winning.

You know why Donnie Baseball isn't on the list........Cause Robin Yount and Cecil Cooper had better postseason numbers than Donnie!

A-Rod doesn't make the list but Reggie does? Cmon Koko, your better than that.

I think that whoever was running the Yankee's organization now and then are the best Yankees'

You see what I mean Keith, YOU DON'T READ!

I don't fucking have Reggie on my list. Do you see Reggie on my top 10 list?

Also, I like to mention how sad it is for you to have no other avenue as a baseball fan than to worry constantly about what the Yankees are doing, their all-time players, how much money they make, etc.

Come on man, just come out of the closet already and admit you are the most jealous Yankee hater in America.

OMG's.....I forgot Bernie Brewer! He's number 3.

Brewers did have Hank Aaron in his final season!

C'Mon Sully....It was his last 2 and his first 12 Seasons......Atlanta only had him when they stole Milwaukee's Franchise....then Hank went back to Milwaukee to end it.

Nice Reg! They've had a nice squad for the past few years. One for the books. Can Ben Sheets be included or was his tenture their too short.

Koko said...

Uhhhhhhh, NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

Sorry Regs, sorry Keith. There's no chance in the universe I'm letting you guys claim Hank Aaron.

You've got to be kidding me!

He played for 21 years with the Braves and 2 with the Brewers.

You don't get to claim the players from a different franchise because they left. The Brewers are the Brewers and that's it.

That would be like Mets fans claiming Willie Mays just because he played that last season for them. He's not a Met, he's a Giant.

You guys claiming Aaron is a total disgrace!

Regs said...

Hank Aaron played 14 of his 23 years in Milwaukee. He deserves to be on the list because he came back to his roots.

Koko said...

What a joke Regs. I don't know whether the desparation to put a name on your list is funny or sad.

You made a list of the 10 greatest Brewers. You're honestly going to count Aaron as a Brewer?

Change your list to the 10 greatest players that played in Milwaukee then. A list even less people care about.

Oh and then I guess I will claim all the other great players who ever played in New York as well.

So just add Tom Seaver, Willy Mays, Jackie Robinson and all the others as Yankees now. Good deal.

Regs said...

I didn't include anyone from Milwaukee unless they played for both the Braves and Brewers (Aaron). A Milwaukee top ten (Braves and Brewers) would include (pitchers included):

1. Hank Aaron
2. Warren Spahn
3. Eddie Mathews
4. Robin Yount
5. Paul (Benedict) Molitor
6. Johnny Sain
7. Joe Adcock
8. Cecil Cooper
9. Pete Vuchovich
10. Gorman Thomas

Now that is a stud team

Koko said...

You didn't include anyone unless they played for both the Braves and Brewers?

I didn't know Prince Fielder was 60 years old, he looks good for his age. Also Molitor's career started in '78, pretty sure that's outside the Braves era as well.

Same goes for the rest of your list.

Regs, the only person on both of your lists that played on both teams was Aaron.
And Johnny Sain never played for Milwaukee at all.

What the hell are you talking about?

Prosthetic Johnson said...

Sain actually won the World Series with the Yankees in '51, '52, and '53!
