I was not an avid watcher of this show. I saw the first few episodes in the first season and it did look very promising but I just did not have the time to add another show to the DVR.
I did however hear talk about it all time on The Howard Stern Show as he was a huge fan of it. And all I ever heard from him was that the show never gives any answers and they were just fucking with the audience.
When JJ Abrams was producing in the first few seasons, he came on the show and said they definitely did have an ending in mind an they knew where they were going with the show.
After Abrams left the show, he later admitted that things fell apart and there really was no direction any longer.
The writers were just making shit up as they went along. They had no master plan to tie it all up.
I did watch the final episode and I understand the personal relashionships were a big deal in the show. It seems they did a good job ending those arcs, but the main arc of the island seems to be a huge cop out.
Purgatory is the lamest thing ever. It's completely unoriginal. There never was a sideways universe, which was actually an interesting concept, but it was all bullshit anyway.
Taking a rock out of a hole and putting a rock in a hole is extremely anticlimatic. It really shows just how awful the point of direction went after Abrams left.
All Ive gotta say is....
SMOKE MONSTER !
No thanks.
Thank You Juan for those deeply insightful comments.
And Koko, Did you not watch or read the blog post from one of the writers?
First off JJ Abrams wrote the final episode right after the pilot. That is the reason only the Season 1 cast is in the church at the end. Also, the Sideways world did exist.
Second, How is Purgatory the lamest idea and most unoriginal ever? How many shows are based on Purgatory?
While, You had some great comments and by your stating you only watched the first season and the finale I understand your not comprehending the whole series. But, I do agree with you that the personal relationshis was the best part of the show.
I really enjoyed the first season when it was all about the Characters trying to learn about each other and how to co-exist. Then in the ensuing seasons it did get a little out of control and drifted away from the interactions of the different characters.
However, The Finale I thought was decent.....but in reality much like the Soprano's finale there is no way to live up to the hype. It's like expecting Iron Man III to be better than the first one.
I agree with you Keith that we will always be let down when something good ends. I was upset that the show was over. I loved the characters and enjoyed the stories. But then I sat and thought about if they kept it going for a few more years, how wacked up the story line would get. They had to end it.
I'm still processing the ending and what the whole story was trying to be. I am listening to interviews with the cast and am looking out for the articles.
It seems like the Island was real but the sideways story was not. The survivers are dead or will be, ie Hurley, Ben.
I read that the story was about Jack. He had a mested up life and a lot of things in his life was unresolved. It took him these six seasons to get his lif together and in the end he was able to move on.
I think they could start a whole new LOST generation show with different characters but give us more answers to some questions. Who made the Island lady the protector? Why didn't Jack become the SMOKE MONSTER after being in the glowing water? Where did Jacob, the MIB, and their mother come from? Why did they have to end ittttt????????
All in all, it was a great show. One of my personal favorites. I liked the acting, characters, directing, scenery, everything. I always looked forward to Thursday and Tuesday.
Keith that thing about Abrams is not true. I've heard pleanty of interviews with him and he said that they had a definite ending in mind but since season 2 he has been barley involved with the show.
Here's his quote about the finale when asked if he would direct it:
“It would be an honor to go back and direct the finale. The reason I won’t do it is that Jack Bender, who is the directing producer on the show, has essentially earned the right to do whatever he wants. He should be directing the finale.”
And Jack Bender did direct the finale and apprently did do whatever he wanted.
And of course purgatory is a cop out, it's a glorified dream sequence. There is no consequence in purgatory. Nothing that happened there was real, it was just a bunch of spirits gathering together to get into heaven. An alternate universe would have been way more interesting to explain.
And the Sopranos' finale was infinitely better. There's only one question left from that show, all the other story arcs were completed. Whether Tony got killed or not is a great debate, but the finale had incredible depth and meaning.
Koko, Abrams wrote the Final scene right after the Pilot.
Also, For someone that didn't watch the show or understand it you seem very upset by it.
While It is great to hear your feedback I don't get your anger when you didn't watch any of it except the Finale? How can you comprehend anything about it from watching the first episode and the last episode of a 6 season show?
Oh wait, I forgot you listen to Howard Stern and just like to regurgatate what he says rather than take the time to form your own "informed" opinion.
This coming from the illegitimate son of Colin Cowherd.
Even if Abrams did write the ending, which is not confirmed by anyone, it still doesn't change the fact that it was incredibly lame on a sci/fi scale.
And I have watched at least a dozen or so episodes trying to get into it here and there. But everytime I watched it, it screamed filibuster.
And did you just say that I don't form my own opinions?
Have we met?
I don't know of 2 sideways worlds. Just one.
