The Truth Will Set You Free?

Posted by Keith G.

Ok, So one of the biggest mysteries of our lifetime has been solved. Big Mac comes clean after all these years and finally admits to using Roids. Wow....Can You Believe it? Well, I think everyone already knew this and the fact that he is going to be an active coach on Tony LaRussa's bench prompted him to come clean now before distracting the 2010 Cardinals run at stopping the Brewers from winning the division.

Does this set Big Mac free or does this hinder his chances at joining the Hall? Also, do you think many months from now when the storm fades he will be free from constant questioning on the bench about his roid use? I think he will be clear and free by the time the season gets under way and in a way it will be liberating for him. In this case the truth actually will set him free. Now, we just have to sit back and wait for Barry (6"1 185) in Sully's 1991 Baseball card and Sammy (6"0 and 175) in Neil's 1991 baseball card decide to come clean to receive the royal freedom treatment as well.

However, There is one instance where I don't understand the use of coming clean. Has anyone seen these new Domino's commercials? Why would any company come out and say the things they are saying especially paying good money to promote the fact they were serving us horrible product for the past 40 years. I never thought Domino's was atrocious but now I guess it is, and I for one will probably never order Domino's again since I know these facts they just taught me:

"Domino's pizza crust to me is like cardboard."
"The sauce tastes like ketchup."
"The worst excuse for pizza I've ever had.
"Totally void of flavor"

Really? That's the impression you want to make on us? I never thought that but now that is my impression of Dominos. Oh wait they are changing their taste because the head chef at Domino's is hurt by these claims. Yeah, because when I order Domino's there is going to be a chef making my pizza......not some 18 year old kid?????

I get the attempt to say they learned from their mistakes and now have a better product. But was it really necessary to go that far? I truly never thought Domino's was horrible but that is my impression of them now......and they are the ones that created that impression for me??????

Two great examples of when to use the truth and when to keep your mouth shut.

McGwire could have come clean but once again it was a bunch of half truths.

I think a lot of people who did not have anamosity toward him before this admission, will now have it due to the very big matzah ball he left on the table. He said that the steroids had no effect on his performance, only health.

Now either he's delusional and actually believes that or he's okay with lying some more.

Either way, I have more respect for someone that just keeps his mouth shut rather than having some big coming out party just to spill a bunch of new lies.

I don't think McGwire helped himself out at all with this, it actually did more harm than good.

As for Domino's, their pizza has always been the bottom of the barrel. An ad campaign admitting this can't do much harm to their reputation, it can only get some people who have sworn off of it to give it another chance. I won't be one of those as they've tried this "new and improved" thing before and it was the same exact crap. If I have to eat fast foot pizza, Papa Johns is far superior to Pizza Hut or Domino's.

I disagree with both Keith and Koko on the steriod issue. I feel it was a smart marketing stunt by his publicists to get all the steriod issues out of the way so he can come back to the MLB. By the time the regular seaon starts most of the talk will be over. But by this time he will be settled in his new gig. Andy Pettitte came out and it was as if everybody forgot it was anissue with him.

Fast food pizza, really? Fast food Pizza? It seems we can have a debate on anything these days, which is good. First of all It's fast food Pizza. Papa Johns, Domino's, Lil' ceas, etc....are fast food. When do we actually order the Pizzas for a gourmet meal. We are usually drinking alcohol or need something cheap when making an order. Again I think it was a great idea for Domino's. They are trying to reinvent them selves in this tough market. Domino's is now a house hold name with all the paid and free publicity it is getting. I was watching the Colbert Report the other day and Stephen was basically advertising for Domino's. I for one have been contemplating a Domino's order because I want to taste the difference.

McGwire was coming back as the hitting instructor whether he made this "confession" or not. It's not like if he didn't do this he would not had been hired. He already had the job. I honestly think the guilt is killing him on a daily basis. Although he is still not being completely honest with himself on the full effect steriods had on his play.

And obviously you do not take your pizza seriously there Scotty. It is NOT all fast-food pizza. "Fast food," represents the tier of quality, not the actual speed or conditions in which we order it.

McGwire's statement that he didn't think steroids helped him on the field was one of the more laughable things that I have heard in a long time.

They had a stat on Sportscenter comparing him before he said he used to after.
The quick recap is that his average went up 30 points, his HR per at bat went from 14 to 8, his slugging % went from .500 to .680, and his highest HR total went from 49 to 70.
All he said is what everyone already knew.

If would have just said something like "One year I started noticing guys who had made unusual gains in the weight room and were mashing the ball. Guys that were coming after my job. So I started asking around and found out what they were taking and decided to start using what they were taking in order to compete and save my job. It was wrong and I feel terrible (sob, sob, sob)"
People would understand a lot more.

As for pizza, I don't expect much from any of the carriers, so I'm not disappointed. It is what it is.

Koko you wrote "McGwire was coming back as the hitting instructor whether he made this "confession" or not. It's not like if he didn't do this he would not had been hired"

I did not know he was coming back. Also, although he "cheated" with steriods, he still was a great player. It takes skill to make it to the big leagues and his earlier states show he was a great player. Many younger player will have a great advantage learning what they can from him, good or bad.

"Fast food," represents the tier of quality, not the actual speed or conditions in which we order it."

I know that but my point is that if you really want a great pizza you go somewhere else, for instance,a nice gourmet restaraunt or little italy. When you want it fast, you can't expect it to be the best. It should a least be hot and not soggy.

Koko, Yes he was coming back as the hitting instructor regardless and already had the gig. But that is the whole point.

Do you want to endure this firestorm now and by the time pitchers and cathers report it is all over. That is exactly what Scott pointed out Petite did and by the time the season rolled around it was not as big of an issue.

Would the Cardinals players want to have the extra burden of the media storm of them having to answer the question of if he did or didnt througout the season? No, and that is why he strategically came out now.

Make no mistake this was all strategically planned out. He is not coming out to set himself free as much as he is coming out so he can be a hitting coach next season and not have to endure a Media Firestorm during the season.

Koko said...

What controversy? What firestorm? No one cared about him anymore, he created this himself because he feels so damn guilty.

The Cardnials made the annoncement that he was going to be the hitting coach months ago. Nobody cared. Nor would there be any type of "firestorm" this coming year. McGwire had become an afterthought. Reporters were no longer interested in him or anyone's thoughts of him. If he just stayed silent, that's exactly how the season would have gone. Now it brewed it all up again. And I'm all for that if you're going to say "fuck it," and truly pour your heart out. But he didn't, unless he actually believes the crap about steroids not helping performance. In that case I just feel sorry for him. He did this purley because of the mountain of guilt he's been feeling. But he must know deep down that he still has not told the whole truth. A logical human being can't actually look as his career and say that the steroids did not enhance his performance.

He should have stayed silent instead of doing this. No one was looking for him, now he'll get endless, "Do you really think steriods did not help your numbers?" questions.

And Scotty, the time it takes to get a pizza equates nothing to it's quality. Sometimes it takes 35-40 minutes for Papa Johns or Pizza Hut to deliver, when I can get much higher quality pizza from an independent restaurant in like 15 minutes. And it's never a gourmet restaurant. Great pizza rarley comes from a great restaurant anyway. 99% of the time it's a hole in the wall place that just does pies.

Does anybody really care anymore ?
This guy is still lying.
It'sjust part of modern day sports , the majority of athletes receive HGH from there doctors cause its completely legal and just as affective as anabolic steroids.
As I always have said before , in my opinion they have all tried it.
Mcgwire is a puss.

Anybody want to open a Senior Pizza chain ? We could send JW on the anchovie runs !
I honestly havent ordered Dumbing hoes , Pizza slut or papa blows in a very long time.

Prosthetic Johnson said...

True. I misused the word restaurant as opposed to whole in the wall type joint. I get your point and agree. However these new commercials may cause people like myself to try Domino's just to taste the new recipe.

Koko said...

They have not all done it. That's just as ridiculous as saying none of them have done it.

Extremes are never an accurate take on a situation. The truth usually lies somewhere in the middle.

Regs said...

The true question is:

Would YOU do it if faced with the same situation as baseball players in the early 90's?

My answer- Hell Yeah

Rich said...

Do any of you guys work?

theJUANdiggler said...

I agree most lie near the middle but in this instance absolutely not. Being that working with weights and strength training are a huge part of athletics ,almost anybody who has trained has used supplementation of some sorts( creatine, protein supps, testosterone pills, steroids).
Not only were these substances not banned or more importantly not tested for, these guys had personal doctors prescribe it for them.
I think it's more laughable to think only half of them did it. To say with conviction knowing what a huge role drugs have in sports today to think certain sport darlings like lebronJames, d jeter, b farce have never done it is farther from reality than saying all of them did.
It's just part of life in athletics today, who cares.

Koko said...

Putting creatine and protien powders in the same category with steroids is ridiculous.

Of course 99% of athletes train in the gym but that does not mean 99% of them use illegal products.

And back off of Jeter, not that guy man, not that guy.

Koko, Big Mac was named hitting coach a while back, but still had been hiding away from public and reporters to my knowledge. I hadn't seen him in any news conference about the hire so he hadnt put himself in the questioning firing line. This interview w Costas does help ease him back into the spotlight so the '10 Cardinals don't have to keep answering questions about him when they show up to camp. Hitting coaches for the most part don't do much in the way of interviews. He will still try to hide & shy away from reporters so he doesn't have to answer the hard questions. He's using the Costas interview hoping that when teams report in 2 months that it will have blown over by then.

Dominos sucks. Go Papa Johns!

Koko said...

That's exactly my point Sean, he did the exact opposite of easing back in.

Easing back in would had been to stay quiet and keep shying away from reporters. All he did is put a bunch of new kindle out there to burn. Now there's more reason than ever to try and get statments out of him.

The only way the interview would have been successful is if he told the real truth and take away all the reasons to ask him questions, but instead he just lied some more.
