Capitilism

Have's Vs Have Not's?

Has Lebron James escaladed the NBA into a higher echelon because of his “Decision” to take his talents to South Beach? Look at the domino effect this one choice is going to have on Sports. Lebron says I have all the power the workers are in charge here, not the owners…I am going where I want to. And now, we have Chris Paul demanding a trade out of New Orleans just because he can.

I must admit a New York Big 3 of CP, Amare, and Carmelo vs Lebron and Crew in the Eastern Conference Finals the next 5 years would be quite a rivalry that would make every single game a must see. Not to mention the economic effects the NBA would see just from the Eastern Finals with NY and Miami markets being represented.

(A side note here is the irony of the Chris Paul trade is that he essentially demanded with 2 years remaining basically trade me to Orlando or New York. I once made a bet with Johnny which I’m sure he will still defend that I would unequivocally (I got that word from Mel’s rant) take Dwight over Emeka Okafor. Blaze vehemently argued ( I know you don’t believe Blaze would argue something) that Emeka was a much better choice for the Magic. Two years into the league Johnny still lamented that Emeka would be a better fit for the Magic. Well, here is the twist the only way any team can get Chris Paul is if they take Okafor off the Hornets hands. Well, the Magic they are one of Paul’s choices because he can play with Dwight)……….

Anyway, Do you feel this is a good thing for the NBA? Capitalism is rooted in having Haves and Have Not’s in society. The power in the NBA has shifted from Owners to Players. In the NFL which is the number one sport in America the Owners clearly have all the Power. And, somehow even small market teams can continually compete year in and year out. However, in the NBA it looks like it is going the way of baseball where only the larger market and sexy cities will be able to compete.

I really don’t see the likes of Memphis, Charlotte, Milwaukee, Sacramento, Minnesota, and especially New Orleans if CP3 Leaves ever landing big name or even mediocre name free agents. Pretty soon you will have top heavy teams and lower tiered teams much like Major League Baseball. Sure the Bucks might compete for a 1 or 2 year stretch if some of their big drafts turn out and they make all the right moves….but once their big name draft pick becomes a free agent he will bolt and they will have to start all over again.

Well, the NFL dominates is this because of parity or just because football is a much better sport than any of the others? Personally, I am beginning to think the NBA is going to get immensely more popular with all these big 3 alliances forming.

Lastly, I want to throw out my theory on “The Decision”. I don’t think Lebron was that stupid to think his hometown fans wouldn’t mind with how he stuck a knife in their back on National TV. However, I think he made a pact with ESPN that if they did not report on and put gag orders on all their TV and Radio personalities about the Delonte West incident he would reward them with the exclusive rights to the TV show. Think about it….for some reason all ESPN radio host are forbidden to mention Delonte and Lebron’s Mom but Fox sports and Mad Dog can talk about it all day long. Colin briefly mentioned it once but even admitted he couldn’t talk about just google it yourself…but never referenced it again after receiving a scolding.

Just some thoughts on a Friday afternoon…..Good Luck tonight boys. I will not be there since I am traveling to Wisconsin for scouting duties.

P.S. Really, I just rambled on so I could make an excuse to post my favorite picture of all time. I felt waiting two weeks after Manute's passing was appropriate.

Once again it's the human condition at work here. Either way, people are not completely happy.

When there are dominant teams, you hear that the league is too top heavy and small markets don't have a chance.

Then when there is parity, you hear that the league has too many average and boring teams and they miss the days of the super powers.

Basketball is different from baseball and basketball because just 3 players can change a last place team to a championship contender. In order for the NBA salary cap to actually work and keep most of the star players on the teams that drafted them, they need to eliminate the sign and trade option. That way the player can not get the extra money their own team can give them and leave at the same time. This would make leaving teams much more difficult for players who do not want to give up that extra 30 million.

However, if players take this "win at all cost," attitude for real, there's really nothing short of eliminating free agency that can stop these "super," teams from forming. And yes, they'll only form in the more attractive markets to maximize their value and supplement their incomes. Big markets in the NBA have zero financial advantage over small market teams but they'll always have the X factor of more endorsment opportunities, bigger brand recognition, and a more exciting place to live. There's no salary cap or rule that can ever change that.

You forgot to mention Cleveland as a place nobody would like to play.

Have a great trip to the Wiiiiiiii!

"Capitalism"...

My whole defense of the Okafor deal was if you were the Magic, would you draft to win right away or build a team around a player for a couple of years. Minister took the stance of winning right away with Howard, which wasn't even an option, and not a player who played four years and was just in the NCAA championships. No guy drafted makes you instant contenders. They're works in progress. A guy who played no college ball is at a disadvantage. In all honesty, Dwight has showed us that with his actions sometimes. I think Keith's whole stance on winning right away is just another classic example of him extracting only the necessary information he needs to form a contrarian statement.

Yeah but Blaze you do have to admit that you backed the wrong horse. Whether you wanted to win right away or build around a guy, Howard is the better player in any situation and any team picking Okafor over howard is making the wrong choice.

That being said, I as a Knicks fan would welcome him with open arms . . . as long as he comes with CP3.

I admit nothing...the whole point was I would rather have a guy with a college pedigree than raw..no one knew who would be better. I am sure I was not the only person during that draft that went huh?. Hindsight is always 20-20.

Koko said...

Yes it is 20/20 and it shows you backed the wrong horse Johnny.

ADMIT IT!!

Neither have won anything, yet. I feel the conversation isn't over til one of the guys win a ring, then I'll admit it.

UNACCEPTABLE!!

A real man admits when he's made a mistake!

Excuses do not exist in this Dojo!

I'm not making an excuse...the question wasn't who is the better player now? It was as a business decision to build a team and win now or down the road, who would you pick. Even as good as Howard is and I know he is better now, I would still draft a guy fresh out of the pressures of the NCAA championship then a raw, physical specimen, if I wanted to win sooner than later. That's what I feel the whole gist of the debate was, not who turned out to be better down the road.

on a side note...the magic either kill you with 3's and Dwight gets his 8pts. or they feed Dwight all game and he scores 35-40pts. but not much spreading of the offense. If Okafor was on that team now, with that type of offense, he would average double doubles on a nightly basis without affecting the outsid game..just a thought

Koko said...

Ah come on, I don't buy it. If you're drafing a player it's a pretty piss poor decision to not take the guy who you think is going to be better overall. When you draft a highly touted player you always hope it's someone who a team can be built around. Who wastes a draft pick on someone you only think will be good for a couple of years? That's what free agency is for.

Okafor was the wrong pick whether you thought he was better now, then or whenever. Howard is the superior player and anyone taking Okafor over him at any point in history was incorrect.

Johnny: "No guy drafted makes you instant contenders."

Ever hear of Tim Duncan?

Johnny said...

...but he played playoff ball in the NCAA..Duncan was not raw when drafted..so at least some team thinks a little like me and drafts people who played college championship ball. Sulli, who would you draft, Howard or Duncan, and try to answer without a bias

I actually like high end rivalries in basketball, whether Milwaukee is included or not. I used to love Lakers v Celtics and Bulls v Pistons. Super teams bring excitement to the NBA.
