Freedom?

Posted by Keith G.

In a follow-up to "Regers Rant" click on this link" to see where local radio host (DonJuan's Favorite) Dan Sileo has been suspended because he upset Tampa Bay's Owners the Glazer family.

Sileo said the team lost over $440 million in the Maddoff ponzi scheme and was trying to sell the team because of it. Well, the Glazers were not happy so they pulled their weight within the fledling local radio business and pushed for Sileo to be suspended because of his comments.

Once again, Rob.......Sileo is not looking at any immeninet jail time just losing a pay check because he opened his mouth and said something his bosses didn't like. Maybe his bosses did or did not care about what he said...but in a dying AM talk show market pissing off the big money of the only professional football franchise in the area probably is not a smart business move.....and thus his bosses had to act accordingly. Obviously, there were no racial, or homophobic overtones but the same premise as LJ being suspended for doing something the people whom cut his check don't like. Is this a violation of the constitituion or simply business people making business moves?

On a another note I am looking to the Dojo members to help me solve my own dilemma with Freedom? Freedom to watch TV that is. I am going to the UCF V Marshall game Sunday night at 8:15 and would like to tailgate. However, as you know the NFL game of the year is on at 4:15 when the unamed Prodigal son returns to Lambeau.

Is there any way to watch a game from the parking lot? I have a power source, but I don't beleive TV's work anymore unless they are plugged into a cable outlet. Is there any way to watch an NFL game on the Internet or someway to utilize a TV? I look to my Tech guru's to solve my dilemma. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Keith,
It is a very slippery and dangerous slope when employers start telling their employees how to think and act. They seem to hide behind the whole "you represent our company and you must act and think the way I do" mantra.
Many dictators throughout history used this to control the media in their countries.
Employees have rights too, even if they are an "at will" employee.

My personal thought on the subject is that unless the actions of the employee directly effect their ability to do specific work duties, the employer should leave them alone.
It would be very easy for whatever station Sileo works for to run a simple statement saying " the views expressed on this show by the host and callers do not neccesarily reflect the views and opinions of the station".

Many controversial shows do this and are just fine. To me, this is just a copout. Larry Johnson should not be suspended because he does not like gay people. Carrie Prejean should not lose her title because she thinks (along with well over 50% of other Americans) that a marriage should be between a man and a woman, and Sileo should not be suspended for his comments on the Glazer family.

I think the "well over 50% of other Americans" comment is a pretty poor argument. Well over 50% of Americans are complete retards! When slavery was legal well over 50% of Americans were for it. I'm sure well over 50% of Germans believed in the NAZI movement, Earth is round, religion, etc. Just because the majority believe something doesn't make it okay. We live in a society of followers with a herd mentality.

I mean well over 50% of people voted for Bush twi........I mean once. Besides those polls they take are full of shit. Nobody asked me! (and your gonna come back with "50% of people voted for Obama" but hey, they can't always get it wrong)

Also, the point that keeps getting lost is that it doesn't matter if 99.999% of people think marriage should be between a man and a woman. YOU HAVE NO SAY!!! You can't decide what people get what rights. The fact that gay people cannot get married is a violation of their civil rights and everyday that they are withheld makes this country look very bad.

I'm not here to debate civil rights. I'm here to debate whether a person has a right to have an opinion that does not interfere with their job duties. Regardless of what you believe, right or wrong, Americans should be able to have that opinion.

Opinions are great Regs.....and I wish more people had opinions it would be a better country.

However, you do have the right to express your opinions at work and or in a public forum. But you must also be ready to face the consequences if you are speaking in a public forum.

Most of us like to get saucy at Gators on Friday night....which is our right to do. However, if we were to broadcast that on national TV and one of us was the mayor of Orlando.....do you think that would be fine? Do you think some of our conversations on national TV would not be bad if we were public figures?

Fine Regs, then just put your money where you mouth is.

Walk into your office tomorrow and broadcast, "NO MARRIAGE FOR HOMOS!!"

Then you can win this argument, but until I hear that recording, you're pissing in the wind.

Carrie Prejean was asked her opinion by a certified judge of the competition. At that point she either had to lie or look like a bitch by not answering. That is very different than walking into an office and making an announcement.

No,no, you were talking about American's right to have an opinion in the work place, don't defelct with Ms. Cuntifornia.

She was in a contest. A contest with judges. Her opinion counts towards the title she was trying to win. Totally different animal.

You know, Koko, it is possible to disagree with something but agree with the persons right to do it. I'll give you an example. I don't smoke pot, but I 100% support legislation legalizing it. I still won't smoke it, but I think it should be legal.

Ok Regs, we'll have to discuss this futher in person because the way you're keeping on point is making me think you've had some 100%-support-legislation-legalizing brownies.

So then just because you don't agree with gay people getting married they should still have the right to do it, shouldn't they?

I don't give a shit what gay people do. If you need to know, when Prop 2 was on the ballot, I left it blank, because I have no opinion on the subject. I am not gay and have a legal, binding marriage certificate to my wife.
What I don't like is being told by anyone what to do, what to think, or what to say. I think our country would be a lot further along if more people spoke their mind. Instead you have millions of people who have certain thoughts, but are afraid to express them because they are afraid of the reactions by people.

For example, how many companies today are run by people who are racist and homophobic but never say anything? In public they say they love minorities or gay people, but when it comes down to who gets the job or who gets the promotion, it is always the straight white man. These people are the most dangerous to those groups because they are hard to spot. I
