Actor/Director Jon Favreau was on Howard Stern today talking about his film Iron Man and they all got into a discussion about the best super hero movies of all time. These are super hero comics only, graphic novels like "300" are not counted.
Here's my list:
10. The Punisher (2004)
A very underrated film that was not heavily promoted. Thomas Jane was perfect as the Punisher, John Travolta was a weak villain but they kept true to the story and did the best they could with a small budget. Also the brutal violence you would expect from the Punisher kicked in near the end of the film. A sequel "Punisher: War Zone" is in production now.
9. Blade (1998)
Not a well known comic book character before the film came out but Snipes nailed it. The story and action were very entertaining with a great villain played by Stephen Dorf.
8. Superman II (1981)
The best of the Christopher Reeve Superman films. Terrance Stamp's performance as Zod holds up even today as one of the best and most quoted villain performances ever. "Kneel before Zod"
7. Constantine (2005)
Another non-mainstream character. The actual comic book is titled "Hellblazer" Constantine is the anti-hero trying to save his own soul by sending as many demons back to hell as he can. The movie was really well done. Great effects and writing, the story keeps you interested all the way through and has a really high replay value.
6. Batman (1989)
The holy grail of comic book movies for some people, mostly Tim Burton fans. Burton did a great job making Batman cool again. The black costume is something that even the comics could not ignore after this film came out. Keaton is still the best Batman and you would be hard fought to argue anyone has ever played a better villain than Nicholson's Joker.
5. X-Men (2000)
The first successful super hero team movie. This film shocked fans at how good it was. With all the bad comic book movies coming out during this time no one thought Bryan Singer could pull off a film with this many characters. Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart were born to play Wolverine and Professor X. Writing was above average, story was good, and the cinematography was great as is with most Singer films.
4. Superman Returns (2006)
Bryan Singer's homage to the original 1978 release. Singer took a lot of criticism for not having an original story, but the Superman character needed a reboot for the younger generation. The cinematography was outstanding. It truly is one of the best looking films I've ever seen. Brandon Routh captured what Christopher Reeve had all those years ago and Kevin Spacey, although underutilized in this film, was a great Lex Luthor. However, Kate Bosworth was not a good Lois Lane and Superman pretty much just lifted heavy objects the entire film. Singer has assured fans that the next film will be filled with action, showing the wrath of an "angry god." Sounds awesome.
3. Spider-Man (2002)
This movie was just stripped right off the pages of the comic. Sam Raimi directed this film flawlessly. Tobey Maguire was just right as the young and nerdy Peter Parker and Willem Dafoe churned out a Nicholsonesque Green Goblin performance. Also, J.K. Simmons stole the movie as a pin-point J. Jonah Jameson. The story was predictable, as it should be in an origin movie, but kept the audience very enthralled. The movie did have some flaws though, with a bad casting decision of Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane, and in one scene with Spidey and Goblin on the rooftop the costumes look a little ridiculous.
2. Iron Man (2008)
Actor/Writer/Director Jon Favreau hits one out of the park with his "Iron Man." A genius decision to cast Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. Downey turns in the single best super hero character performance of any comic book adaptation ever. The writing is great, the action and special effects are unmatched, and the movie stays fun throughout the whole story. However the real weight of this film was on Downey's shoulders and he carried it without breaking a sweat.
1. Batman Begins (2005)
It didn't have the best effects nor did it have the best performances, but "Batman Begins" bows to no one with it's story. Director Christopher Nolan captured the true essence of Batman from the early comics. Showing just how Bruce Wayne traveled the world picking up talents and training which he would us to avenge the death of his parents. Christian Bale is very solid as the young Bruce Wayne/Batman and you have to wonder how Michael Cain was not chosen to play Alfred in the 1989 Batman. Katie Holmes is a weak actor but her character was not that important and Liam Neeson is very believable as yet again the mentor to the "chosen one." Although this time he plays it as a villain. Like "Superman Returns," this film's cinematography really puts the audience in the mood of the story and reveals the true feeling of Batman's early years.
Notable Mentions: X-Men: The Last Stand (2006); Superman (1978); Ghost Rider (2007); The Crow (1994)

I like your picks, but I would change two. Iron man and batman begins flip spots. The most recent superman doesn't make the top ten. Otherwise phenom.. job as always koko. later.
Thanks man. How could Superman Returns not make the top 10? It lacked action but was directed and produced very well.
I'm not a chick. I want to be stroked, not petted. For example, Superman 2 was great, it displayed an array of interaction between the super people. The action sucked me into a vortex of happiness. Superman Returns had the tools to become a great movie, but came up soft like Mikey around women.
Nice, hey we can say whatever we want about Mikey on here. He'll never know because his weakness is the intranet.
I can picture him poking the computer at home with a club, eventually getting angry and saying..."Hulk smash!"
Finally saw "Unbreakable". Have to say it was a pretty good movie. 2nd best movie that Midnight mofo has made. Gets a 7.75 out of 10. The ending was nice.
Good! Good you say! It's amazing. It actually gets better every time I see it. The ending is way better than "I was dead the whole time" thing in the Sixth Sense.
It's easily a 9.5 minimum. Get your shit straight man!
You are too liberal when it comes to ratings. A 9.5, come on. A movie that gets a 9.5 is a monumental movie. Something the whole world loves. You need to get your shit together. It was good, I'm happy I saw it, thats it!
No that's not it fuck you. And that's a 9.5 FUCK YOU. Too liberal? I pick apart every detail, if something is that good than i would have to give it its just due.
Unbreakable was monumental, no not to everyone becasue they don't get the subtle nuances of what that movie was doing in relation to comics. But it is the best non-comic adaptation super hero movie ever.
By the way my rating of your baseball team choice is 0.0.
...But you do get a 10 for football.
Fuck me! Fuck you! Biatch! A ten out of ten is like busting while on X. Its like reaching the end of the rainbow and banging the fuck out of lucky charms, its like getting Mikey to give you a rusty trombone while you read off your winning lottery numbers, its like a Jew getting his yamaka(spell check please). A ten is Godly in my book. A 9.5 is at the right hand of that.
Look, I gave your movie props, but we all have different rating systems and likes. So fuck you. You liberal fuck.
By the way, I still think you do a great job rating movies. Not that you care what a Mets fan has to say. Its also battle of the losers this weekend. Ny vs Ny. Let the worst team win, punk.
Whatever man I'm not going to argue this anymore, if you can't see how great a movie Unbreaka. . . .
Did Rich just say he'd fuck the Lucky Charms guy?
I'm done too. I said it was good, a 7.75 on my scale is a very good movie. We are all entitled to have an opinion and standards. Thats what makes this world so wonderfull, the differences. You are not the omnipotent voice of reason, but I do listen to what you say and appreciate thoughts and writing skills. My IQ is high enough to notice these subtle ques.
And yes ,I would bang the leprachaun and take his gold.
Finito, Mother fucker!!!!
I think we should watch it together so I can point out all the cool shit in that movie piece by piece.
Then we can watch Night Shift, Keatons first film. I can't believe you haven't seen that, it's a classic.
But if you come over please do not fuck any of the inanimate cartoon characters on my cereal boxes or anywhere else in the house. Thanks.
I promise I won't stick my dick in any of your lunch boxes. And, I look foward to watching Keatons movie with you.
Later, bro
