Personally, I liked Balboa but am teetering on loving it with every showing on Showtime as my special bed time present the last few weeks. Maybe I am getting caught up in the moment but that speech he gives his son in the street and whips him into shape is one of my favorite speeches.
I also admire how Stallone picks up and acts like Rocky V never happened, even naming the movie Balboa instead of Rocky VI.
Admittedly being the worlds biggest Rocky fan I was not ecstatic about Balboa the first time...I liked it...but didn't love it. Also, just for you other Rocky fans or simply red blooded Males who who get a distinct rush every time they see Rocky running the stairs on TNT as they flick by, needing one more fix....You know they are running a Rocky every night this week on WGN from 8-10.
Also, this past Sunday morning I needed to get pumped up after a long weekend of drinking as we had Scott't party on Sunday night so I popped in Rocky IV.......I still think that "If you Can change, and I can Change" speech did change the entire world and helped end the cold war.....but I also can't seem to get over the fact that he fought Drago in Russia on X-Mas for FREE! No Purse?????? I get the whole premise to avenge Creed's Death in all but why in God's name would you let Russia pocket all those Millions....I mean the whole arena is sold out and it is communist Russia......so in essence the Gov't would be getting that money and most likely using it to buy more missles....I mean what was the Pay Per View purse on that.......I mean imagine X-Mas night getting a spectacular fight to watch live from Russia....I would have put down the $29.95 in a heartbeat.
X-Mas night is such a boring night, after you finally get rid of family etc.....you could watch a great bout......Also, think of at that time, the Rocky Pay-Per View slash Rocky "Win One for America and Apollo" T-Shirts would have been the hottest selling Christmas/Hannukah gift of all time.....way bigger than Tickle Me Elmo or Castle Grayskull. I mean who got to pocket all that......if the Soviet Union did than Rocky should have rethought that one.
Anyways, I guess my point is that I love Rocky.....I admit it I love Rocky......in the most heterosexual way possible.
Oh Wait...back to Balboa. I also think they could have cut about 15 mins off the story and given "Duke" a little more training scenes and some more speeches. Duke the Trainers speech in Rocky IV was out of this world, and I think in Balboa he only has like 2 lines......I could have used a little more training montage and a little more Duke. I did love how they used Max Kellerman and he gets all excited when Rocky says to him ringside..."How Ya doin"....."I mean Rocky Balboa just said hi to me".......Max turned into a little kid and he was suppossed to be announcing the match......great story line. I could go on but I will stop.....just watch Rocky III tonight and Rocky IV Thursday night at 8 P.M. on WGN!!!!!!!
Great passion in that post Keith, but you do know that Rocky is not a documentary right?
I agree bro, Balboa gets better every time I see it. I really think this movie was judged too harshly. It really is a quality film. And I think it ended the series perfectly.
I want to get it on Blu-Ray as soon as I get a player.
