The last one "Superman Returns" in 2006, did not suck but it was considered a big disappointment because it was essentially just a remake of the original from 1978. It didn't break any new ground or take the character to the next level like the Tim Burton films did with Batman and then again with the recent Nolan films. And what Sam Raimi did with Spiderman.
Burton and Nolan kept Batman relevant for their respective generations while the best version of Superman is still Christopher Reeve from the '70s, old and dated.
If this film is half as good as the trailer is making it out to be, it will give a whole new perspective on Superman for a young generation that doesn't look at him with relevancy.

The combo of Snyder's directing and Nolan's input on script will give the greatest hero of them all, the film he finally deserves.
